LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Vivianna Rivera for her heroic action
upon the occasion of saving the life of a seventh grade classmate and
becoming a role model for her fellow students

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to acknowledge the
heroic acts of young citizens who voluntarily take immediate and appro-
priate action to safeguard the health and safety of others; and
WHEREAS, Vivianna Rivera is a seventh grade student in the Poughkeep-
sie, New York, Middle School; and
WHEREAS, Without formal Heimlich procedure training, Vivianna Rivera
immediately responded to hearing the gasping of a choking classmate in
the back of her mathematics class by using several abdominal thrusts to
dislodge an obstruction lodged in the classmate's throat; and
WHEREAS, The courageous and quick actions of Vivianna Rivera in a life
threatening medical emergency, accomplished with distinguished bravery,
provide an excellent role model for her fellow students and are an
inspiration to her classmates, friends, family and all fellow New York-
ers; and
WHEREAS, Through her voluntary commitment to respond as a concerned
citizen, and to protect and safeguard the safety and welfare of her
classmates and community, Vivianna Rivera has unselfishly contributed to
the advancement of that spirit of united purpose and shared concern
which is the cornerstone of community life in this State and Nation; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when an act of
such heroism is brought to our official attention, the same should be
memorialized for the edification and emulation of all; now, therefore,
be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Vivianna Rivera for her heroic action upon the occasion of
saving the life of a seventh grade classmate and becoming a role model
for her fellow students; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Vivianna Rivera.
