LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 190th Anniversary of the Town
of Chili

WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor and commem-
orate the distinguished histories of the communities which comprise the
noble body of this great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 190th Anniversary of the Town of Chili in Monroe County, New
York; and
WHEREAS, Six weeks prior to April 2, 1822, by an act of the New York
State Legislature, Chili was separated from the Town of Riga; Chili was
formally known as East Riga and Hanover; it then became its own entity;
and
WHEREAS, On that particular day, residents were responding to the
invitation to convene for their very first town board meeting; they were
arriving at James Coleman's house in Buckbees Corner which was situated
in the northwest corner of Braddocks Road (Union Street) and Chili Road
(Chili Avenue); this was across the street from the present day Byrne's
Dairy; and
WHEREAS, Chili was divided into 31 districts of roads and bridges;
each pathmaster or highway overseer had to maintain roadways by keeping
them as clear as possible; if a bridge fell apart, the person in charge
was heavily fined and his reputation could suffer; and
WHEREAS, Being a pathmaster was a position of honor, but could also
bring shame if that person was derelict in duty; roads in the 1800s were
rugged and rough, but to keep one smooth and navigable was a credit to
one's name; and
WHEREAS, District No. 1 was Joseph Morgan's territory near Scottsville
Road; he was the first settler in Chili in the late 1790s; Captain John
Wetmore who fought in the War of 1812, and financed the Olde Stagecoach
Inn in North Chili, made sure those roadways were acceptable; and
WHEREAS, Another Captain in the War of 1812 was Elias Streeter who
maintained District No. 17 around his home on Union Street in south
Chili near Morgan Road; his house still stands today as a museum,
Streeter's Inn; and
WHEREAS, Remaining fruitful over the ebb and flow of decades of growth
and change, the Town of Chili continues its commitment to enhancing the
quality of life of its citizens, ensuring a positive business, institu-
tional and educational climate, and providing all essential services;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 190th Anniversary of the Town of Chili, recognizing the
significance of the role it continues to play in the life of the commu-
nity of the State of New York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Town of Chili.
