LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring the memory and celebrating the life of
Harry Chapin, Founder, Long Island Cares, Inc. - The Harry Chapin Food
Bank

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
those citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeav-
or served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and the
great State of New York; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor the memory and
celebrate the life of Harry Chapin, Founder, Long Island Cares, Inc. -
The Harry Chapin Food Bank; and
WHEREAS, Long Island Cares, Inc. is Long Island's first Food Bank, and
one of the region's most comprehensive hunger action organizations; the
year 2011 marks the 30-year anniversary of the passing of Harry Chapin;
and
WHEREAS, Throughout 2011, Long Island Cares, Inc. will remember Harry
Chapin and celebrate his legacy of helping the hungry; and
WHEREAS, Founded in 1980 by the late singer, songwriter and social
activist, Harry Chapin, Long Island Cares, Inc. provides nutritional
food and support services for a network of more than 540 community-based
member agencies including food pantries, soup kitchens, emergency shel-
ters, child care programs, disability organizations, veterans services
and more; and
WHEREAS, Long Island Cares, Inc. provides a broad array of programs
and services including hunger education, job training, supplemental food
programs for children, school supplies, job development, legislative
advocacy, and a triage food pantry; and
WHEREAS, Ably led by Executive Director Paule T. Pachter, Long Island
Cares, Inc. continues to prosper today and into the future; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the well-being and vitality of their community and have shown a
long and sustained commitment to excellence certainly have earned the
recognition and applause of all the citizens of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor the memory and celebrate the life of Harry Chapin, Founder, Long
Island Cares, Inc. - The Harry Chapin Food Bank; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Paule T. Pachter, Executive Director of Long Island Cares,
Inc. - The Harry Chapin Food Bank.
