LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Ellen Sheldon upon the occasion of her
designation as recipient of the 2012 MERRICK LIFE Mother of the Year
Award

WHEREAS, Individuals who give of their time and energies and serve the
best interests of their communities are an asset beyond remuneration and
cannot be sufficiently extolled; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to acknowledge
outstanding individuals whose professional lives, personal endeavors and
community service are an example and inspiration to their colleagues,
friends, and family; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Ellen Sheldon upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of the
2012 MERRICK LIFE Mother of the Year Award; and
WHEREAS, Ellen Sheldon is a special education teacher in a co-teaching
English 11R class at Kennedy High School in Merrick, New York; she has
been at Kennedy High School for 16 years and previously taught at Mepham
High School; and
WHEREAS, A native Merokian, Ellen Sheldon is a graduate of Cure of Ars
School; she went to high school at Sacred Heart Academy in West Hemp-
stead, New York, and then attended Fordham University; and
WHEREAS, Ellen Sheldon and her husband, John ("Jake"), have resided in
Merrick since 1979; they are the proud parents of three sons, Kevin,
Luke and Andrew; all of whom attended Chatterton School, then Merrick
Avenue Middle School and graduated from Calhoun High School; and
WHEREAS, This auspicious occasion presents a unique opportunity for
this Legislative Body to recognize and pay tribute to Ellen Sheldon as
the 2012 MERRICK LIFE Mother of the Year; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of her professional and communi-
ty service, a period of constructive involvement, Ellen Sheldon has
stood constant in dignity, good grace and humor, and has earned the
respect and admiration of her colleagues, family and friends; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Ellen Sheldon has displayed through-
out her life; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Ellen Sheldon upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of
the 2012 MERRICK LIFE Mother of the Year Award; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Ellen Sheldon.
