LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION celebrating NYPD Police Detective Kevin Brennan's
recovery from critical wounds received in the line of duty and his
promotion to Detective

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and honor
those distinguished officers and citizens who devote themselves to
public service, demonstrating great courage and diligence in providing
for the care and welfare of the citizens of their communities and this
great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and fully in accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to, and is
pleased to have the opportunity to celebrate NYPD Police Detective Kevin
Brennan's recovery from critical wounds received in the line of duty and
his promotion to Detective; and
WHEREAS, It was a day of miracles for NYPD Detective Kevin Brennan as
he walked out of a Manhattan hospital just 10 days after he was shot in
the head and went home to hold his baby girl; and
WHEREAS, NYPD Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, dozens of cheering and
applauding officers, and police bagpipers greeted Detective Brennan as
he was wheeled out of Bellevue Hospital Center; and
WHEREAS, Detective Brennan, 28, who was shot January 31, 2012 during a
late-night struggle with a gunman in Bushwick, believes that thinking
about his daughter, Maeve, at the time not yet 2 months old, helped pull
him through; and
WHEREAS, As Detective Kevin Brennan walked toward his front door after
arriving home from the hospital, he said, "I'm going to hug my daughter
right now." and so he did, and, as he sat on his couch with his wife,
Janet, he gently rocked Maeve in his arms, his gaze fixed on her; and
WHEREAS, Detective Brennan, who watched the Giants win the Super Bowl
from his hospital room, wore a Justin Tuck No. 91 Giants jersey for his
homecoming; and
WHEREAS, Soon after arriving home, Kevin Brennan got a surprise visit
from Justin Tuck himself and the star Giants defensive end happily auto-
graphed the jersey; and
WHEREAS, Justin Tuck, in town to accept a ceremonial key to Nassau
County, was at Umberto's restaurant in New Hyde Park with one of his
agents, Rich Salgado, suggested they go say hello to Detective Brennan
and bring him some pizza; and
WHEREAS, So that is what they did, bringing along with them Umberto
Corteo, Umberto's founder, and Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano;
and
WHEREAS, The night of the shooting in which he was injured, Detective
Brennan was among three plainclothes officers responding to a call of
shots fired; he chased one of three men they saw running, Luis Ortiz,
into an apartment building; and
WHEREAS, Luis Ortiz, 21, who allegedly shot Detective Kevin Brennan in
the right rear of the head with a .38 caliber handgun, has been charged
with first-degree attempted murder and related felonies; and
WHEREAS, The round penetrated Detective Kevin Brennan's skin and
lodged outside his skull; according to Dr. Ronald Simon, the Bellevue
Hospital Center surgeon who removed the bullet, Detective Brennan
suffered mild damage and a loss of some peripheral vision, but hopefully
will completely recover; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Simon also said that considering that the bullet didn't
go in or go through, or do some really significant damage, is nothing
short of a miracle, adding that he is hopeful that Detective Brennan's
eyesight will return completely; and

WHEREAS, While happy to be home, Detective Kevin Brennan is still
suffering head and neck discomfort and will be an outpatient at a reha-
bilitation facility; and
WHEREAS, Detective Brennan's father, Dave Brennan, a retired Con
Edison worker, says that all the thoughts and prayers that everybody
had, and that they prayed for his son, worked, adding that so did having
the luck of the Irish; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
celebrate NYPD Police Detective Kevin Brennan's recovery from critical
wounds received in the line of duty and his promotion to Detective and
to wish him good health and continued success; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Detective Kevin Brennan.
