LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Verona McKie upon the occasion of her
designation for special recognition by Mauby Media Services

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to call attention to
those esteemed residents of the State of New York who dedicate their
lives to the improvement of their communities; and
WHEREAS, Verona McKie has given not only of her time and energies but
also of her competence, intelligence and leadership and consequently has
been designated for special honor; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Verona McKie
upon the occasion of her designation for special recognition by Mauby
Media Services, celebrated on Friday, September 21, 2012, at St. Jude
Community Center in Brooklyn, New York; and
WHEREAS, Mauby Media Services is hosting the "Salute to Yesterday's
Children" event, which is a benefit and award ceremony acknowledging
community elders; and
WHEREAS, Verona McKie was born in St. Vincent, but grew up in East Dry
River and Charlotte Street in Port of Spain, Trinidad; the mother of two
boys, she was a domestic worker for most of her adult life until she
migrated to the United States after her mother's death; and
WHEREAS, Verona McKie's favorite childhood pastimes were crab hunting
and sea bathing; in 1970, she came to the United States on the invita-
tion of her aunt and life took a turn for the better; although it was
heartbreaking to leave her children behind, in three months, she was
able to have the family reunited in America; and
WHEREAS, Verona McKie worked as a domestic and then as a Nurse's Aide
at a nursing home in Queens; her secret to living a long life is to pray
without ceasing; she is a member of the St. Ann Spiritual Baptist Church
where she is known as Mother Verna; and
WHEREAS, A true asset to society, Verona McKie's distinguished record
merits the recognition and respectful tribute of this Legislative Body;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Verona McKie upon the occasion of her designation for special
recognition by Mauby Media Services; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Verona McKie.
