LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Baskin Livestock, Inc. upon the occasion
of its designation as the 2011 Agricultural Business of the Year by the
Genesee County Chamber of Commerce

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize the
achievements of those individuals and businesses which substantially
contribute to the economic vitality of their communities and the entire
Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, it is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend
Baskin Livestock, Inc. upon the occasion of its designation as the 2011
Agricultural Business of the Year by the Genesee County Chamber of
Commerce, to be celebrated at its Annual Awards Ceremony on Saturday,
April 14, 2012, at the Clarion Hotel in Batavia, New York; and
WHEREAS, In 1991, Bill Baskin and his wife, Susan Blackburn moved from
New England to Genesee County, bringing along their business raising
heifers for the dairy industry and fat cattle for the meat market; and
WHEREAS, The couple boarded their cattle at other farms for a few
years before moving to Creek Road in 1993, after buying a former dairy
farm in East Bethany, New York; and
WHEREAS, At that time, Baskin Livestock consisted of three people;
today, the company has grown into a multi-pronged operation with 39
employees; and
WHEREAS, Baskin Livestock continues to raise dairy replacements, about
950 animals on the home farm; they also fatten and sell beef steers and
raise a few American Quarter Horses; and
WHEREAS, The livestock remains the core of Baskin Livestock; some
dairy animals are sold locally and others to dairies in the Mid-West,
while others are exported to other countries including Mexico, Saudi
Arabia, Venezuela, Turkey, and Russia; and
WHEREAS, While in Rhode Island, Bill Baskin had to get creative with
livestock feeding due to the lack of corn-based feed; his innovative
solution used by-products from the baking industry and other waste from
human production which was then mixed as a corn replacement; and
WHEREAS, Today, Baskin Livestock works with 40 to 50 human food
production companies taking their waste and turning it into 65,000 tons
of animal feed annually, thereby diverting the human food by-products
from landfills; and
WHEREAS, It is with great pleasure that this Legislative Body acknowl-
edges this exceptional business and its contributions to the local and
State economies, fully confident that it will continue to enjoy the
sparkling successes it has experienced thus far; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
