LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Edwin Springstead for over 50 years of
distinguished service in coaching cross country

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to act, in accord with
its long-standing traditions, to commend notable educators and athletic
coaches who serve the youth of this great Empire State and who have
distinguished themselves and their schools through outstanding commit-
ment and exemplary athletic achievement; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Edwin Springstead for over 50 years of distinguished service in coaching
cross country; and
WHEREAS, Coach Springstead began his physical education teaching
career at Kingston High school in 1956; in the fall of 1958, he began
teaching and coaching cross-country at Colonie High School; and
WHEREAS, At Colonie High School, Coach Edwin Springstead coached Barry
Brown, an Eastern State Champion, who went on to be a world class
athlete in steeplechase and the marathon; in 1962, Coach Edwin
Springstead's Team won the State Championships; outstanding athletes
such as Frank Myers, Paul Gansel, Ray VanEpps and Ed Green ran for him
at Colonie; and
WHEREAS, Coach Springstead began teaching and coaching cross-country
at Shaker High School in the fall of 1966; he retired from teaching in
1989 and has continued to coach cross-country and outdoor track and
field; and
WHEREAS, The former Shaker Invitational has been renamed in Coach
Edwin Springstead's honor since 2007; he and his team won the New York
State and Federation Cross-Country Championship in the fall of 2010; and
WHEREAS, Recently being named the "TIMES UNION, Coach of the Year,"
Edwin Springstead has clearly had an enduring impact on the youth of the
North Colonie School District, as well as on the community-at-large, and
accordingly merits recognition and applause for his impressive dedi-
cation to others; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend the
efforts of those individuals who work to support our proud tradition of
public education by providing their skills and talents to our schools;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Edwin Springstead for over 50 years of distinguished service in
coaching cross country; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Edwin Springstead.
