LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION calling for justice for Trayvon Martin, and an
end to the practice of all forms of stereotyping in his honor

WHEREAS, The shooting death of 17 year-old Trayvon Martin on Sunday,
February 26, 2012, in Sanford, Florida, has raised awareness of the
profound danger of all forms of stereotyping; and
WHEREAS, Across New York State, our nation and globe, the death of
young Trayvon Martin has brought awareness of these social injustices to
unprecedented heights; and
WHEREAS, While the death of Trayvon Martin may forever remain shrouded
in unanswered questions, as a Legislative Body it is always our duty to
make sure the communities we represent move forward and help provide
healing to even the most controversial questions; and
WHEREAS, We must act on behalf of the people of the State of New York
and the legacy of Trayvon Martin and do all within our power to make
certain that all our young men and women can walk on the streets of the
communities of this Empire State in safety and without fear; and
WHEREAS, As such, it is urgent and necessary that the tragic circum-
stances surrounding the death of Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Florida, be
fully investigated; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body also condemns the use of any form of
stereotyping as it is a flawed and prejudiced practice which results in
the victimization of citizens in a free country where race, gender,
sexual orientation, and religious beliefs should not be the basis for
determining one's guilt or innocence, and it violates our nation's basic
constitutional commitment to equality before the law; now, therefore, be
it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
call for justice for Trayvon Martin, and an end to all forms of stere-
otyping in his honor; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the United States Department of Justice.
