LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Bob Matthews for his many years of time
and dedication as a gifted writer for the community of Rochester, New
York

WHEREAS, Individuals who give of their time and energies and serve the
best interests of their communities are an asset beyond remuneration and
cannot be sufficiently extolled; and
WHEREAS, Bob Matthews has given not only of his time and energies but
also of his competence, intelligence and leadership and consequently has
been designated for special honor; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Bob Matthews
for his many years of time and dedication as a gifted writer for the
community of Rochester, New York; and
WHEREAS, Bob Matthews has been called upon to contribute his time and
talents to countless civic and charitable endeavors and has always given
of himself unstintingly; and
WHEREAS, A Vietnam veteran, Bob Matthews honorably served his country
as a member of the United States Army; and
WHEREAS, Shortly after retuning from Vietnam, Bob Matthews began work-
ing at the TIMES-UNION in Rochester, New York, as a sports columnist;
and
WHEREAS, After the TIMES-UNION went out of print, Bob Matthews trans-
ferred his skills as a dedicated columnist to the DEMOCRAT AND CHRONICLE
in Rochester, New York; and
WHEREAS, For decades, Bob Matthews wrote sports for the hometown he
loved and the country he defended in war; and
WHEREAS, As a sports writer, Bob Matthews has become a legend of the
Rochester community, and is affectionately known to many as, Mr.
Rochester; and
WHEREAS, Bob Matthews' writing style has been referred to as a folksy,
almost innocent honesty of a man and his writing; he found great success
through his passions, peculiarities, and by simply being himself; and
WHEREAS, Bob Matthews was also a master of radio whose audience became
his family; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of his community service, a
period of constructive involvement, Bob Matthews has stood constant in
dignity, good grace and humor; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Bob Matthews has displayed through-
out his life; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the quality of life in their community and have shown a long and
sustained commitment to the maintenance of high standards in their
profession, certainly have earned the recognition and applause of all
the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Bob Matthews for his many years of time and dedication as a gifted
writer for the community of Rochester, New York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Bob Matthews.
