LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION memorializing Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to
proclaim Thursday, November 15, 2012, as Children's Grief Awareness Day
in the State of New York

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize official
days that are set aside to increase awareness of serious issues that
affect the lives of our young people from the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, it is the sense of this Legislative Body to memori-
alize Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim Thursday, November 15, 2012,
as Children's Grief Awareness Day in the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Children who have had a loved one die, especially a friend or
close family member, can carry that loss with them forever, causing
confusion and fearfulness as they struggle to understand why their loved
one was taken away; and
WHEREAS, The third Thursday in November has been designated as Chil-
dren's Grief Awareness Day; and
WHEREAS, Many trained professionals working at dedicated children's
grief centers throughout the State of New York offer bereavement coun-
seling to children and their families; and
WHEREAS, Such counseling provides emotional support for children
struggling with grief, allowing them to find guidance and understanding
during an extremely difficult time; and
WHEREAS, On November 15, 2012, citizens and communities throughout New
York State are encouraged to wear blue in an effort to raise awareness
and show their support for children in mourning and the grief centers
which serve those young people confounded by the reality of death; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body recognizes the efforts of all those who
raise awareness and educate others about children and their grieving
process, contributing to improving the quality of life for our youth,
our most precious resource; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
memorialize Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim Thursday, November 15,
2012, as Children's Grief Awareness Day in the State of New York; and be
it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to The Honorable Andrew M. Cuomo, Governor of the State of New
York.
