LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Albany SNUG upon the occasion of being
selected to receive the University at Albany President's Award for Exem-
plary Community Engagement on May 8, 2013

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across New York State
are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those organiza-
tions and individuals who would devote themselves to the welfare of the
community and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Albany SNUG upon the occasion of being selected to receive the 2013
University at Albany President's Award for Exemplary Community Engage-
ment, to be celebrated at an event on Wednesday, May 8, 2013, at the
University at Albany; and
WHEREAS, This esteemed award honors individuals, projects, and
programs that have made exemplary contributions to addressing a signif-
icant societal need, and that have enhanced public well-being through
community-engaged research, creative activity, teaching, academic study,
and public service; and
WHEREAS, Under the exemplary leadership of Director Raheim Jones,
Albany SNUG is a violence intervention program which utilizes a public
health approach to reduce violence in local communities disproportion-
ately affected by violent behavior; this vital program is implemented by
Trinity Alliance of Albany; and
WHEREAS, The public health view of violence encompasses the ideas that
violence is a learned behavior, is caused by social forces including
lack of opportunity, and is a cultural norm in subgroups with a higher
rate of homicide; and
WHEREAS, With a goal to stop shootings and violence, Albany SNUG works
with those individuals most closely associated with the problem, and in
the neighborhoods where this violence is occurring; by creating an
educational campaign, as well as a visible presence, this program has
proven to be successful; and
WHEREAS, It is the practice of this Legislative Body that when indi-
viduals and organizations of such noble aims and accomplishments are
brought to our attention, they should be celebrated and recognized by
all the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Albany SNUG upon the occasion of being selected to receive the
University at Albany President's Award for Exemplary Community Engage-
ment on May 8, 2013; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Albany SNUG.
