WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize official
days that are set aside to increase awareness of serious illnesses that
affect the lives of citizens of New York State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and fully in accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to memorial-
ize Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim April 6, 2013, as Gastrointes-
tinal Stromal Tumors (GIST) Awareness Day in the State of New York, in
recognition and support of those suffering from GISTs; and
WHEREAS, Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors are tumors that form inside
of the gastrointestinal track typically in the stomach or small intes-
tine; and
WHEREAS, These tumors can be cancerous and lead to internal bleeding,
swelling in the abdomen, nausea, vomiting, low red blood cell count, and
death; and
WHEREAS, It is estimated that 4,500 to 6,000 GIST are diagnosed each
year in the United States; and
WHEREAS, These tumors form randomly even in patients with no family
history of GIST cancer; and
WHEREAS, Surgery, chemotherapy, and drug therapy can help, but many
sufferers are unaware of their options due to lack of public knowledge
and funding making research difficult; and
WHEREAS, The GIST Cancer Awareness Foundation (GCAF) works to educate
the public about Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors and GIST screening and
treatment as well as support GIST patients and their families through
community support groups; and
WHEREAS, It is imperative that there be greater public awareness of
this serious health issue, and more must be done to increase activity at
the local, State and national levels; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
memorialize Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim April 6, 2013, as
Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors (GIST) Awareness Day in the State of New
York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
