LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending the Gay Alliance of the Genesee Valley
upon the occasion of celebrating its 40th Anniversary in 2013

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across New York State
are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those organiza-
tions and individuals that are devoted to the welfare of the community
and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
the Gay Alliance of the Genesee Valley upon the occasion of celebrating
its 40th Anniversary in 2013; and
WHEREAS, The Gay Alliance of the Genesee Valley is dedicated to culti-
vating a healthy, inclusive environment where individuals of all sexual
orientations and gender expressions are safe, thriving, and enjoy full
civil rights; and
WHEREAS, The first meeting of what was to become the Gay Alliance of
the Genesee Valley occurred on October 3, 1970, at the University of
Rochester; and
WHEREAS, The Gay Alliance of the Genesee Valley was incorporated in
1973; in the 1980s, the Alliance began to evolve towards becoming a
service organization or human services agency; and
WHEREAS, In January 1994, the Board of Directors of the Gay Alliance
of the Genesee Valley approved a strategic plan that chartered the
course of the Alliance as it entered the 21st Century; and
WHEREAS, Under the leadership of its Executive Director, Sue Cowell,
and Board President, John Altieri, the Gay Alliance of the Genesee
Valley continues its extraordinary work dedicated to empowering individ-
uals and dealing with heterosexism and homophobia through education,
support groups and advocating for an end to discrimination; and
WHEREAS, This auspicious occasion presents a unique opportunity for
this Legislative Body to recognize and pay tribute to the Gay Alliance
of the Genesee Valley; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when an organ-
ization of such noble aims and accomplishments is brought to our atten-
tion, it should be recognized and applauded by all the citizens of this
great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause its deliberations to
commend the Gay Alliance of the Genesee Valley upon the occasion of
celebrating its 40th Anniversary in 2013; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Gay Alliance of the Genesee Valley.
