LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Gina Gibney upon the occasion of her
designation as recipient of the Arts Management Award by the Brooklyn
Arts Exchange Arts and Artists in Progress

WHEREAS, It is the practice of this Legislative Body to honor and recog-
nize those individuals whose commitment and creative talents contribute
to the cultural enrichment of their communities and of the entire State
of New York; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Gina
Gibney upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of the Arts
Management Award, to be celebrated at the 14th Annual Brooklyn Arts
Exchange Arts and Artists in Progress Award Ceremony, on Saturday, March
28, 2015, at the Brooklyn Arts Exchange Building, Park Slope, Brooklyn;
and
WHEREAS, The Brooklyn Arts Exchange (BAX) Arts and Artists in Progress
awards recognize individuals in the arts who have revealed and trans-
formed their creative works; by instigating change they have deepened
the definition of their field and paved the way for others; and
WHEREAS, These distinguished awards are given to some of the most
talented, generous, creative, and inventive persons in New York City
dance, theater or performance; each awardee is then asked to Pass It On,
honoring a colleague who demonstrates the same qualities for which they,
themselves, were chosen; and
WHEREAS, A native of Ohio, Gina Gibney currently resides in New York
City; in 1991, she established Gibney Dance, a two facility resource
center, with a vision to create contemporary choreography that expresses
the humanity of the moving body and to reach societies in need; and
WHEREAS, Since its inception, the Gibney Dance has generated a reper-
tory of over 30 dance works, including 14 evening length projects which
have been widely presented throughout the United States and abroad; and
WHEREAS, Highly sought-after by a wide range of performing arts insti-
tutions, Gina Gibney's work has been featured by such venues as Danspace
Project, New York, White Bird, Oregon, the Yale Repertory Theater,
Connecticut, and L'Agora de la Danse, Montreal, Canada, as well as
Internationale Tanzmesse, Dusseldorf, Germany; and
WHEREAS, Described as a poet of modern dance by the NEW YORK TIMES,
Gina Gibney has been the recipient of numerous awards and accolades
including the Northern Ohio Live Arts Award, the Copperfoot Award for
Choreography, the Young Alumni Award, and the Our Town Thanks You Arts
Award; she has also been recognized by Sanctuary for Families, Safe
Horizon, and The Retreat, and was named a Finalist with the Alpert
Award; and
WHEREAS, Dedicated to bringing the power of dance, both in performance
and in practice, to new audiences and communities, Gina Gibney has
received support from numerous prestigious organizations, such as the
National Endowment for the Arts, the New York City Department of
Cultural Affairs, Jerome Robbins Foundation, the Andrew W. Mellon Foun-
dation, the LuEsther T. Mertz Charitable Trust, Mertz Gilmore Founda-
tion, and the New York Community Trust/Lila Acheson Wallace Theater
Fund; and
WHEREAS, Gina Gibney serves as a member of the Directors of Dance/NYC
Board, and is a former Director of both Danspace Project and Dance/NYC;
she is also a frequent panelist and speaker on the topics of dance,
social action, and entrepreneurship; and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
those individuals who add strength, vigor and inspiration to the

cultural diversity and quality of life in the communities of the State
of New York; and
WHEREAS, It is most fitting that we take time to celebrate the arts of
our Nation, to honor our artists, and to express our appreciation to
everyone who patronizes the arts; and as we celebrate the arts, we cele-
brate and give thanks to our American freedom, the only atmosphere in
which artists can truly create and in which art is truly the expression
of the soul; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Gina Gibney upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of
the Arts Management Award by the Brooklyn Arts Exchange Arts and Artists
in Progress; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Gina Gibney.
