LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Mayor William Nelson upon the occasion
of his retirement after more than 20 years of distinguished service to
the City of Ogdensburg, New York

WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
recognize and acknowledge those within our midst who have made signif-
icant contributions to the quality of life therein; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
Mayor William Nelson upon the occasion of his retirement after more than
20 years of distinguished service to the City of Ogdensburg, New York;
and
WHEREAS, Mayor William Nelson has served as a public servant for the
residents of St. Lawrence for over two decades; he served on the Ogdens-
burg City Council for six years, and was a member of the Planning
Commission for three years; and
WHEREAS, William Nelson was then elected to the esteemed position of
Mayor of the City of Ogdensburg, New York, a position he held for 16
years; and
WHEREAS, During his many years of public service, Mayor William Nelson
was instrumental in a number of projects which have had a positive
effect on the community, including the demolition of Diamond National
and its subsequent clean-up for redevelopment, clean-up of polluted
properties and shorelines, new businesses, jobs and capital investment
in the City, the building of the Dobisky Visitors' Center, improvement
of the city's recreational facilities and the fight to preserve jobs at
both the Ogdensburg Correctional Facility and the St. Lawrence Psychiat-
ric Center; and
WHEREAS, In his capacity as a public servant, Mayor William Nelson
served with loyalty, honor and distinction, and was governed by a keen
sense of duty and always showed a unique grasp of human problems in his
official acts; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Mayor William Nelson upon the occasion of his retirement after
more than 20 years of distinguished service to the City of Ogdensburg,
New York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Mayor William Nelson.
