LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating SUNY Downstate Medical Center's
50th Anniversary of the College of Health Related Professions, College
of Nursing, School of Graduate Studies, and University Hospital of
Brooklyn

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize and pay
tribute to those particular medical institutions which distinguish them-
selves through professional excellence and that have made significant
contributions to the quality of life of citizens in the State of New
York; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commemorate SUNY
Downstate Medical Center's 50th Anniversary of the College of Health
Related Professions, College of Nursing, School of Graduate Studies, and
University Hospital of Brooklyn; and
WHEREAS, This auspicious milestone will be celebrated with a
banner/pennant unveiling highlighting research discovery, academic
excellence and outstanding patient care on Tuesday, January 19, 2016, at
the SUNY Downstate HSEB Main Lobby/Atrium, Brooklyn, New York; and
WHEREAS, As the only academic medical center in Brooklyn, SUNY Down-
state Medical Center serves a large population, over 2.3 million people,
and one that is among the most diverse in the world; in fact, many of
its students are the first in their families to attend college and
pursue careers in their communities; and
WHEREAS, More physicians who practice medicine in New York City
received their training at SUNY Downstate Medical Center's College of
Medicine than at any other medical school in the country; and
WHEREAS, Nationally, the College of Medicine ranks seventh in the
number of graduates who are now engaged in academic medicine; locally,
SUNY Downstate Medical Center has trained nearly half of all doctors in
Brooklyn in a number of specialty areas; and
WHEREAS, The College of Health Related Professions and the College of
Nursing also play unique roles in Brooklyn and New York City by offering
the oldest midwifery program in the country and by educating minority
students, approximately three-fourths of the students are minority-group
members and many are recent immigrants; and
WHEREAS, The College of Health Related Professions, founded in 1966,
is dedicated to educating the next generation of health professionals in
diagnostic medical imaging, medical informatics, midwifery, occupational
therapy and physical therapy as well as physician assisting, leading to
baccalaureate, masters, and doctoral degrees; and
WHEREAS, Also founded in 1966, The College of Nursing is one of the
largest in New York State, offering bachelor and master degrees and is
one of only four colleges of nursing in the State offering a master's
degree in all advanced practice roles, including clinical nurse special-
ists, nurse practitioners and nurse anesthetists as well as nurse
midwives; and
WHEREAS, Since 1966, The School of Graduate Studies has been dedicated
to training future scientists and providing students with the tools
needed to contribute to a body of scientific knowledge; it grants the
PhD degree, and along with the College of Medicine, sponsors a combined
MD/PhD degree; and
WHEREAS, Graduates of the School are represented nationally and inter-
nationally in scientific research, postdoctoral studies and academia as
well as industry; and
WHEREAS, University Hospital of Brooklyn (UHB), built in 1966, is the
primary clinical training site for medical, allied health and nursing
students, residents, and fellows, and is recognized with a number of

important designations that distinguish it from other area hospitals;
and
WHEREAS, Brooklyn's only kidney transplant service and pediatric dial-
ysis program are signature programs at UHB and the New York State
Department of Health has certified UHB as an AIDS center and stroke
center as well as a regional perinatal center; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when insti-
tutions which are anchors of education and engines of opportunity for
students interested in pursuing careers in health care are brought to
our attention, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citi-
zens of the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate SUNY Downstate Medical Center's 50th Anniversary of the
College of Health Related Professions, College of Nursing, School of
Graduate Studies, and University Hospital of Brooklyn; and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to SUNY Downstate Medical Center's College of Health Related
Professions, College of Nursing, School of Graduate Studies, and Univer-
sity Hospital of Brooklyn.
