LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 25th Anniversary of the
National Action Network, and recognizing the Annual Martin Luther King,
Jr. Day celebration and public policy forum

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across New York State
are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those organiza-
tions and individuals that are devoted to the welfare of the community
and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is honored to recognize and celebrate
individuals and events which commemorate our nation's great struggle to
fulfill the promise of equality and opportunity for all; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 25th Anniversary of the National Action Network, and recognize
the Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebration and public policy
forum on Monday, January 18, 2016 at the National Action Network's Head-
quarters, House of Justice, New York, New York; and
WHEREAS, The theme of the 2016 Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration
is "Breaking the Cycle of Harm: A Non-Violent Response to Gun Violence";
its focus is the tradition of non-violence as well as creating responsi-
ble solutions to gun violence and effective gun control laws; and
WHEREAS, The National Action Network (NAN) is an organization on the
forefront of the fight for social justice; during its Silver Anniversary
year, this vital group wants to play a substantial role in moving our
nation forward; and
WHEREAS, For the past 25 years, NAN has been addressing important
issues including income inequality, affordable housing, affordable
healthcare, and criminal justice reform, as well as finding effective
solutions to gun violence; and
WHEREAS, How to confront these present challenges and steer the nation
on a progressive course depends on our educators, community leaders, and
civil rights leaders engaging in a dialogue with community members on
issues which affect them; and
WHEREAS, Our society is greatly benefited by the purposeful efforts of
individuals who unite for the cause of improving the quality of life for
others, and who proactively work toward the goal of dignity for all; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when organiza-
tions of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be recognized and applauded by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 25th Anniversary of the National Action Network, and to
recognize the Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebration and public
policy forum; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the National Action Network.
