LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Firefighter John Nester upon the occa-
sion of his designation for special recognition after 60 years of dedi-
cated service to the Clinton Fire Department and the people of Oneida
County

WHEREAS, The firefighters of New York State are renowned throughout the
Nation; their reputation is synonymous with excellence in the arduous
field of fire protection and prevention; and
WHEREAS, Since the early days of "teapot steamers," the volunteer
firefighter has been the cornerstone of our great Nation's efforts to
spare us from the ravages of fire; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is proud to commend Firefighter Chief
John Nester upon the occasion of his designation for special recognition
after 60 years of dedicated service to the Clinton Fire Department and
the people of Oneida County to be celebrated at the Annual Oneida County
Fire Service Breakfast on Saturday, January 30, 2016, in Deerfield, New
York; and
WHEREAS, John "Jack" Nester began his career with the Clinton Fire
Department in 1956, and rose through the ranks to become department
Chief in 1977; and
WHEREAS, During his illustrious tenure, Fire Chief John Nester ably
carried out his duties, and oversaw numerous achievements, including the
purchase of the department's first Jaws of Life and a new Seagrave
Pumper, as well as the restoration of the 1934 Buffalo Pumper; and
WHEREAS, After completing his term as Fire Chief in 1983, John Nester
was appointed Deputy Fire Coordinator, Car 271, and was later placed in
charge of the Oneida County Air Van for several years; and
WHEREAS, John Nester has been called upon to contribute his time and
talents to countless civic and charitable endeavors and has always given
of himself unstintingly; he served as President of the Oneida County
Fireman's Association for two years, and has been a member of the coun-
ty's Arson Task Force since its inception; and
WHEREAS, Volunteer firefighters and fire departments not only provide
the critical service of fire protection but also engage in other activ-
ities of great benefit and importance to the communities they serve; and
WHEREAS, It takes a special dedication, a strong desire to help others
and a tireless sense of community to forsake precious time with family
and friends to respond to the signal that a neighbor is in need; John
Nester is such a firefighter; throughout over 60 years of devoted
service, this volunteer heroically performed, above and beyond the call
of duty, those responsibilities which define the task of fire
protection; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Firefighter John Nester upon the occasion of his designation for
special recognition after 60 years of dedicated service to the Clinton
Fire Department and the people of Oneida County; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to John Nester.
