LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending the Community Council for Medgar Evers
College, Inc. upon the occasion of hosting its Annual Spring Scholarship
and Leadership Awards Luncheon, and paying tribute to this year's hono-
rees

WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
recognize and acknowledge those organizations within our midst who have
made significant contributions to the quality of life therein; and
WHEREAS, From time to time this Legislative Body takes note of certain
extraordinary individuals and organizations it wishes to recognize for
their valued contributions to the success and progress of society and
publicly acknowledge their endeavors which have enhanced the basic
humanity among us all; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commend the Communi-
ty Council for Medgar Evers College, Inc. upon the occasion of hosting
its Annual Spring Scholarship and Leadership Awards Luncheon to be cele-
brated on Saturday, April 16, 2016, in Brooklyn, New York, and to pay
tribute to this year's honorees; and
WHEREAS, This year's distinguished honorees include: Reverend Eliza-
beth Butler, Pastor of the Church of New Beginnings, Ecumenical Leader-
ship Award; Wayne Devonish, Chairman of 500 Men Making A Difference,
Community Service Leadership Award; Dr. Eda Harris-Hastick, Professor
and Director, Social Work Program, Department of Social and Behavioral
Sciences at Medgar Evers College, CUNY, Education Leadership Award;
Celeste Morris, President of Morris Allsop Public Affairs, Business
Leadership Award; and Danica Fouad, Class of 2016, Medgar Evers College
Preparatory School, Youth Leadership Award; and
WHEREAS, The Community Council for Medgar Evers College, Inc. was
established in 1972 as a not-for-profit organization; and
WHEREAS, The Council was formed in the early 1960s at the insistence
of community residents to establish a four year college in the Central
Brooklyn Community; and
WHEREAS, Today, the Community Council for Medgar Evers College, Inc.
includes residents, organizations, faculty, students and all elected
officials of the Central Brooklyn community; and
WHEREAS, This vital organization actively participates in providing
support to the mission of the College, and since 1980, has provided more
than 220,000 dollars in scholarships to deserving students through
fundraising events, outside grants and contributions; and
WHEREAS, The Community Council for Medgar Evers College, Inc. proudly
celebrates with Medgar Evers College of the City University of New York
more than four decades of academic excellence to the residents of the
Central Brooklyn community; and
WHEREAS, Over its distinguished 44 year history, the Community Council
for Medgar Evers College, Inc. has demonstrated continuous service to
the residents and communities which it serves; and
WHEREAS, The success of the Community Council for Medgar Evers
College, Inc. is in direct correlation to the efforts of its members,
whose involvement is, and always has been, characterized by an impres-
sive commitment, an unbridled enthusiasm, and an uncompromising standard
of excellence in all endeavors on behalf of the organization and the
community it serves; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when organiza-
tions of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Community Council for Medgar Evers College, Inc. upon the
occasion of hosting its Annual Spring Scholarship and Leadership Awards
Luncheon, and paying tribute to this year's honorees; and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Community Council for Medgar Evers College, Inc. and the
aforementioned honorees.
