LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Major Marisol M. Torres upon the occa-
sion of her designation as recipient of a Liberty Medal, the highest
honor bestowed upon an individual by the New York State Senate

WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
recognize and acknowledge those within our midst who have made signif-
icant contributions to the quality of life therein; and
WHEREAS, From time to time this Legislative Body takes note of certain
extraordinary individuals it wishes to recognize for their valued
contributions to the success and progress of society and publicly
acknowledge their endeavors which have enhanced the basic humanity among
us all; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Major Marisol
M. Torres upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of a Liber-
ty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an individual by the New York
State Senate; and
WHEREAS, The New York State Senate Liberty Medal was established by
resolution and is awarded to individuals who have merited special
commendation for exceptional, heroic, or humanitarian acts on behalf of
their fellow New Yorkers; and
WHEREAS, A native of the Bronx, New York, Marisol M. Torres enlisted
in the United States Army in 1995 where she proudly served her country
as an Information Systems Operator; and
WHEREAS, During her illustrious military career, Marisol M.Torres
served on numerous important assignments, including her time as an
Information Systems Operator at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, with the
35th Signal Brigade (Airborne) and with the XVIII Airborne Corps Auto-
mations Management Office; and
WHEREAS, In addition, this esteemed soldier served as a Programmer for
the Enlisted Records and Evaluations Center at Fort Benjamin Harrison,
Indiana, and a System and Database Administrator for the Office of
Economic and Manpower Analysis at the United States Military Academy
(USMA) at West Point, New York; and
WHEREAS, In 2004, Marisol M. Torres earned her Bachelors of Science
Degree in Computer Science from Mount Saint Mary College, and went on to
attend Officer Candidate School (OCS) at Fort Benning, Georgia, where
she received her commission into the Signal Corps in December of 2005;
and
WHEREAS, After completing OCS, Major Marisol M. Torres completed the
Signal Basic Officer Leadership Course and was assigned to the 67th
Expeditionary Signal Battalion (ESB) at Fort Gordon, Georgia; she was
later deployed to Iraq as a member of the Ready Battalion and served in
a variety of positions, including Platoon Leader, Battalion S1, and
Assistant S3; and
WHEREAS, In 2009, during her second deployment to Iraq, Major Marisol
M. Torres was selected for command of the 16 Signal Company, 57th ESB
of Fort Hood, Texas; and
WHEREAS, Major Marisol M. Torres completed a Master's Degree in
Computer Science at the Naval Postgraduate School in June of 2014, where
her research culminated in a thesis titled, "Information Collection
Using Handheld Devices in Unreliable Networking Environments"; and
WHEREAS, Following graduation, Major Marisol M. Torres reported to the
United States Military Academy, where she currently serves as a Cyber
Officer and Instructor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and
Computer Science; and
WHEREAS, The recipient of numerous awards and decorations for her
outstanding service, Major Marisol M. Torres has been presented with the

Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal (6
OLC), Army Achievement Medal (2 OLC), the Meritorious Unit Commendation,
the Army Superior Unit Award, the Air Assault Badge, and the US Army and
French Parachutist Badges; and
WHEREAS, Having exhibited her patriotism both at home and abroad,
Major Marisol M. Torres has demonstrated her love for her country and
merits forevermore the highest respect of her State and Nation; and
WHEREAS, Our Nation's soldiers deserve to be recognized, commended and
thanked by the people of the State of New York for their service and for
their dedication to their communities, their State and their Nation;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Major Marisol M. Torres upon the occasion of her designation as
recipient of a Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an indi-
vidual by the New York State Senate; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Major Marisol M. Torres.
