LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Brother George Danes posthumously upon
the occasion of his designation as recipient of the AHEPA Lifetime
Membership Certificate on June 20, 2016
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to honor those promi-
nent citizens whose lifework and purposeful endeavors have served to
enrich and enhance the quality and character of life for others in their
community and the great State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Brother George Danes posthumously upon the occasion of his designation
as recipient of the AHEPA Lifetime Membership Certificate by the AHEPA
Chapter No. 140, to be celebrated with a Dinner on Monday, June 20,
2016, at Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Church Community Center, Albany,
New York; and
WHEREAS, George Charles Danes was born on March 3, 1940, the son of
Charles and Garafalia Danes; he was initiated into AHEPA Chapter No. 140
on December 30, 1962, and became a Lifetime Member of the American
Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA) on April 24, 2015;
and
WHEREAS, A graduate of Albany Academy and Franklin and Marshall
College, George Danes honorably served as a Sergeant in the United
States Marine Corps; upon the completion of his military service, he
taught and coached at the Albany Academy for Boys; and
WHEREAS, George Danes' illustrious career as an investment advisor
began at Spencer Trask in the mid-1970s and spanned more than 40 years;
he worked for First Albany, Merrill Lynch, Cowen and Company, Society
General and ultimately with the Hudson River Investment Group at Morgan
Stanley, where he became a senior vice president; and
WHEREAS, A true asset to his community, George Danes served on the St.
Sophia Greek Orthodox Church Parish Council, was an active volunteer in
the Albany community, and served on numerous other boards, including
Albany Memorial Hospital and The Albany Academy; and
WHEREAS, Time spent with his family, children and grandchildren was
truly precious to George Danes, and he loved to entertain and share good
food, wine, music, and dancing; a lifetime athlete and passionate
golfer, he could often be found on the golf course offering golfing
advice to friends; traveling to golf destinations all over the world was
his other joy; and
WHEREAS, George Danes was an avid reader, and loved to travel to
Europe, especially Greece, and the Island of Lesbos where his family
originated; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, coming from a restaurant family and with a
passion for the business, George Danes became owner of the Gateway Diner
in the late 1970s; seven years ago he fulfilled a life-long dream of
owning a Greek restaurant when he opened the Athos Restaurant; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his wife, Sophia, as well as
their children and grandchildren, all of whom feel privileged to be a
part of his life and rejoice in his achievements; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which George Danes displayed throughout
his life; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Brother George Danes posthumously upon the occasion of his desig-
nation as recipient of the AHEPA Lifetime Membership Certificate on June
20, 2016; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of Brother George Danes.
