LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION mourning the death of Pearline Leontine Thomas-
Sandy, distinguished citizen and devoted member of her community
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavor
served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and the great
State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Pearline Leontine Thomas-Sandy of Brooklyn, New York, died on
December 21, 2014, at the age of 86; and
WHEREAS, Born in Mt. Grace, Tobago, on July 21, 1928, Pearline Leon-
tine was the eldest of six children born to Christina and Henry Thomas;
and
WHEREAS, As a young woman, Pearline Leontine Thomas-Sandy dreamed of
becoming a nurse and was accepted to nursing school in London; however,
out of love and dedication, she chose to stay home and help care for her
siblings; this act of love proved vital in helping them attain success-
ful careers; and
WHEREAS, With a sense of deep compassion, although Pearline Leontine
Thomas-Sandy never received formal training as a nurse, she fulfilled
this desire by caring for others, doing domestic work and taking care of
children in her community as young as newborns, as well as the elderly;
and
WHEREAS, Today, many of the children Pearline Leontine Thomas-Sandy
nurtured and mentored are now working professionals, college students
completing their degrees, or in elementary school; and
WHEREAS, In 1986, Pearline Leontine Thomas-Sandy emigrated to the
United States, settling in Brooklyn, New York, with her daughter and
grandson; and
WHEREAS, Pearline Leontine Thomas-Sandy distinguished herself by her
sincere dedication and substantial contribution to the welfare of her
community; and
WHEREAS, A woman of faith, charity and integrity, Pearline Leontine
Thomas-Sandy believed in working hard and helping others to achieve
their full potential; her spirit of humanity, carried over into all
fields of enterprise, including charitable and civic endeavors; and
WHEREAS, Pearline Leontine Thomas-Sandy is survived by her daughter,
Erleen; her grandson, Richard; four sisters, Liley (Martin), Angela,
Sylvia, and Evelyn; two brothers, Lawrence and Clement (Barbara); as
well as numerous nieces and nephews; and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, Pearline Leontine Thomas-Sandy leaves behind a legacy which
will long endure the passage of time and will remain as a comforting
memory to all of those she served and befriended; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of Pearline Leontine Thomas-Sandy, distinguished citizen
and devoted member of her community; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of Pearline Leontine Thomas-Sandy.
