LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Shannon McGuinness and Pedro Duarte upon
the occasion of their designation as recipients of the New York State
Outstanding Physical Education Student Award

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body takes pleasure in honoring talented high
school athletes who distinguish themselves and their community through
outstanding academic and athletic performance; and
WHEREAS, Athletic competition enhances the moral and physical develop-
ment of the young people of this State, preparing them for the future by
instilling in them the value of teamwork, encouraging a standard of
healthy living, imparting a desire for success and developing a sense of
fair play and competition; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, it is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor
Shannon McGuinness and Pedro Duarte upon the occasion of their desig-
nation as recipients of the New York State Outstanding Physical Educa-
tion Student Award; and
WHEREAS, Each year, high schools across the Empire State select one
male and one female senior who have achieved excellence academically,
athletically and through physical education testing, as well as through
demonstrated leadership, character, and a high level of activity in
their community; and
WHEREAS, Shannon McGuinness and Pedro Duarte of Carle Place High
School, embody all the attributes New York State educators search for in
candidates for such a prestigious award; they have both excelled over
the past four years in every aspect of physical education: preparedness,
commitment, excellence, enthusiasm and most of all, leadership; and
WHEREAS, Shannon McGuinness' and Pedro Duarte's exemplary performance
is reflective of their dedication, determination and personal commit-
ment; their achievements stand as a hallmark of what is best in the
families, schools and communities across New York State; now, therefore,
be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Shannon McGuinness and Pedro Duarte upon the occasion of their
designation as recipients of the New York State Outstanding Physical
Education Student Award, and to commend them for the enduring honor they
have brought to their families, their school and their community; and be
it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Shannon McGuinness and Pedro Duarte.
