LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION mourning the death of Marjory Barnum Hinman,
distinguished citizen and devoted member of her community
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavor
served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and the great
State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Marjory Barnum Hinman of Windsor, New York, died on November
15, 2014, at the age of 87; and
WHEREAS, Born on September 5, 1927, in Johnson City, New York, Marjory
Barnum Hinman grew up in Oakdale with her parents and three sisters; and
WHEREAS, In 1949, Marjory Barnum married Grayson Hinman, and eight
years later, the couple moved to Windsor where they opened a jewelry
store which they operated for 20 years; and
WHEREAS, This extraordinary woman distinguished herself in her profes-
sion and by her sincere dedication and substantial contribution to the
welfare of her community; and
WHEREAS, Marjory Barnum Hinman served as the Windsor High School
secretary for 16 years before serving a four year term as Deputy Clerk
for the Broome County Legislature; and
WHEREAS, Marjory Barnum Hinman's commitment to excellence, and her
spirit of humanity, carried over into all fields of enterprise, includ-
ing charitable and civic endeavors; and
WHEREAS, Her love of history was well-known in the community as she
was the founding President of the Old Onaquaga Historical Society; she
also performed curatorial work at St. Luke's Museum in Harpursville, and
served as President of the Broome County Historical Society from 1969 to
1974; and
WHEREAS, Marjory Barnum Hinman was instrumental in spending over 30
years creating a local history research center at Roberson Center for
the Arts, now located at the Broome County Public Library; and
WHEREAS, Marjory Barnum Hinman received a Bachelor of Arts degree from
the State University of New York, Empire State College; and
WHEREAS, For over 20 years, Marjory Barnum Hinman served as the Wind-
sor Village Historian; and
WHEREAS, A woman of many accomplishments, Marjory Barnum Hinman
lectured extensively for 35 years, published 11 local history books, and
was co-editor on two Windsor books; and
WHEREAS, Active in her community, Marjory Barnum Hinman served on the
county commission for the American Bicentennial, and was co-chairman for
Windsor's Bicentennial celebration; and
WHEREAS, Predeceased by her parents, Zenus and Alice Barnum, and two
sisters, Laurella (Robert), and Edyth (Richard), Marjory Barnum Hinman
is survived by her husband, Grayson, and their three children, Jennifer
(James), Gary (Carolyn), and Dorinda (George); three grandchildren,
Jason (Katie), Christopher, Chelsea (Jonathan), and two great-grandchil-
dren, Alexander and Nadia; as well as one sister, Janet (Jack); and
several nieces and nephews; and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, Marjory Barnum Hinman leaves behind a legacy which will long
endure the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory to all
she served and befriended; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of Marjory Barnum Hinman, distinguished citizen and
devoted member of her community; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of Marjory Barnum Hinman.
