LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION recognizing Maggie Sherwood posthumously upon the
occasion of the Capital Area Council of Churches dedicating the lounge
of its Emergency Overflow Shelter in her honor
WHEREAS, From time to time, this Legislative Body takes note of certain
individuals it wishes to recognize for having given their time and ener-
gies to serve the best interests of their communities and to publicly
acknowledge their service; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to recognize
Maggie Sherwood posthumously upon the occasion of the Capital Area Coun-
cil of Churches dedicating the lounge of its Emergency Overflow Shelter
in her honor; a dedication ceremony was held at the First Lutheran
Church in Albany, New York, on Thursday, January 8, 2015; and
WHEREAS, The Emergency Overflow Shelter is operated by the Capital
Area Council of Churches and is located at the First Lutheran Church in
Albany, New York; the shelter was established in 2001 and is open from
mid-November to April; and
WHEREAS, The mission of the Emergency Overflow Shelter is to be a
refuge of last resort during the coldest months of the year; it provides
simple hospitality, including a bed and a meal on a daily basis to serve
those with no other shelter options in Albany County; and
WHEREAS, Maggie Sherwood was very dedicated to the Emergency Overflow
Homeless Shelter during her life; she was one of the first volunteers
for the shelter through the Capital Area Council of Churches; and
WHEREAS, This esteemed woman selflessly spent time at the shelter
serving as a monitor, and also washed clothes and served meals for the
homeless; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, Maggie Sherwood reached out to her community to
support the shelter by recruiting volunteers and seeking contributions
to keep its doors open; she also sat on the emergency shelter oversight
committee for several years until the time of her death; and
WHEREAS, Maggie Sherwood was a friend to all of the Emergency Overflow
Shelter volunteers, as well as those guests who sought shelter under its
roof; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Maggie Sherwood posthumously upon the occasion of the Capital Area
Council of Churches dedicating the lounge of its Emergency Overflow
Shelter in her honor; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of Maggie Sherwood.
