LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION memorializing Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to
proclaim May 2016, as Neurofibromatosis Awareness Month in the State of
New York
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize official
months that are set aside to increase awareness of serious disorders
that affect the lives of citizens of New York State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and fully in accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to memorial-
ize Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim May 2016, as Neurofibromatosis
Awareness Month in the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Neurofibromatosis (NF), a debilitating disorder of the nerv-
ous system, causes tumors to form on the nerves anywhere in or on the
body at any time; and
WHEREAS, NF affects more than 100,000 Americans and approximately
7,800 residents of New York State, more than Cystic Fibrosis and Muscu-
lar Dystrophy combined; the disorder affects all races, all ethnic
groups and both sexes equally; and
WHEREAS, There are three distinct forms of Neurofibromatosis: NF1, NF2
and Schwannomatosis; and
WHEREAS, Neurofibromatosis' symptoms include but are not limited to
disfigurement, learning disabilities, brain tumors, blindness, deafness,
epilepsy, scoliosis and cancer; and
WHEREAS, To date, there is no cure or effective treatment for Neurofi-
bromatosis; and
WHEREAS, Neurofibromatosis Northeast has worked for more than 25 years
towards its mission to find the cure and treatment for NF by promoting
and funding research, providing hope and support to NF patients and
families, and creating awareness; and
WHEREAS, It is imperative that there be greater public awareness of
this serious health issue, and more must be done to increase activity at
the local, state and national levels; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
memorialize Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim May 2016, as Neurofi-
bromatosis Awareness Month in the State of New York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to The Honorable Andrew M. Cuomo, Governor of the State of New
York.
