LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 150th Anniversary of the
surrender of General Robert E. Lee to General Ulysses S. Grant at Appo-
mattox Court House, Virginia, to be observed on April 9, 2015
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commemorate signif-
icant events which represent turning points in our unique history and
which are indelibly etched in the saga of our great Nation; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such duty, and fully in accord with its long-
standing traditions, it is the intent of this Legislative Body to
commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the surrender of General Robert E.
Lee to General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, to
be observed on Thursday, April 9, 2015; and
WHEREAS, This auspicious event signifies the end of the United States
Civil War, and acknowledges certain extraordinary individuals of remark-
able courage and strength of character who risked their own lives for
others, and stood with fortitude for freedom and humanity; and
WHEREAS, Although New York sent many of its citizens into harm's way
to defend the Union cause, the bravery, and the willingness of all Amer-
icans to sacrifice their lives during the United States Civil War for
the well-being of future generations, is deserving of the highest honor
by all defenders of freedom and democracy; and
WHEREAS, In the course of history, certain events have exemplified the
power of the human spirit to overcome oppression; today we must remember
such events, and pay tribute to the people involved who fought for the
cause of freedom; and
WHEREAS, New York State, its people, and its Legislature have a proud
tradition of being in the forefront of addressing issues of importance
to our great State and Nation; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the surrender of General Robert E.
Lee to General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, to
be observed on April 9, 2015; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Michael Mannigan, of Lowville, New York, as a member of the
"Bells Across the Land: A Nation Remembers Appomattox"-Steamtown
National Historic Site (U.S. National Park Service).
