LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION mourning the death of John E. Cheevers, distin-
guished citizen and devoted member of his community

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavor
served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and the great
State of New York; and
WHEREAS, John E. "Jack" Cheevers of Endicott, New York, died on
Monday, March 30, 2015, at the age of 79; and
WHEREAS, A native of Endicott, John E. Cheevers was born to the late
Edward C. and Monica D. Cheevers on October 4, 1935; and
WHEREAS, After graduating from Union-Endicott High School in 1953,
John E. Cheevers proudly served his country as a member of the United
States Navy for three years; after his discharge, he earned a bachelor's
degree from Clarkson University, Potsdam, New York, where he held the
title of President of his fraternity Alpha Chi Rho; and
WHEREAS, John E. Cheevers distinguished himself in his profession and
by his sincere dedication and substantial contribution to the welfare of
his community; and
WHEREAS, For seven years John E. Cheevers was employed as a Broker for
the First Albany Corporation; in 1974, he founded the investment firm
Cheevers, Hand and Angeline; at the time of his death, he was still
serving as its Chief Executive Officer; and
WHEREAS, John E. Cheevers' commitment to excellence, and his spirit of
humanity, carried over into all fields of enterprise, including charita-
ble and civic endeavors; and
WHEREAS, Known for making his constituents a priority, John E. Cheev-
ers served five terms, 1976-2004, as the Town of Union Supervisor; and
WHEREAS, Active in his community, John E. Cheevers was a former member
of several organizations including the Endwell Fire Department, Knights
of Columbus, Kiwanis, Elks Club, and American Legion; most recently, he
was a vital participant in the Veterans for Peace Organization, and
proudly sponsored the Boys and Girls Club of Endicott; and
WHEREAS, An ardent advocate for the arts, John E. Cheevers supported
the local performing arts in the Southern Tier; he served as a board
member of the Cider Mill Playhouse in Endicott, and was often seen at
the Forum, The Anderson Center and the Chenango Playhouse; and
WHEREAS, John E. Cheevers was also an avid sports fan of both collegi-
ate and professional teams; he was a season ticket holder for both Syra-
cuse University sports and Binghamton Senators Hockey, and he traveled
extensively for many major sporting events; and
WHEREAS, In addition to his parents, John E. Cheevers was predeceased
by his wife, Nadeen (Evans) Cheevers; he is survived by his three chil-
dren, John E. Cheevers, Jr., Susanne M. Cheevers, and Elizabeth (Ty)
Cheevers-Youngs; two grandchildren, Sydney and Taylor Youngs; his fian-
cee, Dianne Lindeborn; three step-children, Doug (Sharon) Evans, Craig
Evans (Dwight Myers), and Jan Evans; and two sisters, Mary Faith
Hunsinger and Cathy (Tom) Ondreyko; as well as numerous cousins, nieces,
and nephews; and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, John E. Cheevers leaves behind a legacy which will long
endure the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory to all
he served and befriended; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of John E. Cheevers, distinguished citizen and devoted
member of his community; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of John E. Cheevers.
