LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Oneonta
YMCA in its present location on June 6, 2015

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize those
illustrious organizations within this great State and Nation whose focus
and intent have made a substantial impact on the quality of life in
their communities; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing tradition, it is the sense of this Legislative Body to commem-
orate the 50th Anniversary of the Oneonta YMCA in its present location
celebrated with an open house on June 6, 2015, in Oneonta, New York; and
WHEREAS, A vital part of its community, the Oneonta YMCA is a diverse
organization whose members join together by a shared commitment to
nurturing the potential of kids, promoting healthy living, and fostering
a sense of social responsibility; and
WHEREAS, Incorporated in 1883, the Oneonta YMCA was first dedicated in
1900 at its original Broad Street location; and
WHEREAS, As its membership and services continued to grow and expand,
this vital organization initiated plans for a new building which was
constructed on Ford Avenue, and dedicated on June 27, 1965; and
WHEREAS, For the past half a century at its current location, the
Oneonta YMCA has carried out its mission of helping others by delivering
a wide variety of programs which enable individuals and families to
reach their fullest potential in terms of spirit, mind, and body; and
WHEREAS, Each year, the Oneonta YMCA delivers programs and membership
services to more than 2,000 members and program participants; it has
collaborated with Oneonta City Schools to provide universal pre-kinder-
garten, childcare, and Jumpstart pre-school programming; and
WHEREAS, In addition, the Oneonta YMCA has begun offering summer
recreational and swimming initiatives; and
WHEREAS, Today, the Oneonta YMCA remains steadfast in its commitment
to serving people of all ages, races, faiths, backgrounds, incomes and
abilities as it strives to fulfill the changing needs of the community
for many years to come; and
WHEREAS, The success of the Oneonta YMCA is in direct correlation to
the efforts of its volunteers and staff, whose involvement is, and
always has been, characterized by an impressive commitment, an unbridled
enthusiasm, and an uncompromising standard of excellence in all endeav-
ors on behalf of this institution and the community it serves; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when organiza-
tions of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Oneonta YMCA in its present
location on June 6, 2015; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Oneonta YMCA.
