Senate Resolution No. 1359

MOURNING the death of Ramon Mendez, beloved
father, distinguished citizen and devoted member of
his community

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavor
served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and the great
State of New York; and

WHEREAS, Ramon Mendez of Lackawanna, New York, passed away on
Thursday, March 2, 2017, at the age of 82; and

WHEREAS, A graduate of Lackawanna High School, Ramon Mendez proudly
served his country as a member of the United States Army Reserve; after
his discharge, he worked at Bethlehem Steel Corporation as a crane
operator in the galvanizing mill for over four decades; and

WHEREAS, Ramon Mendez distinguished himself in his profession and by
his sincere dedication and substantial contribution to the welfare of
his community; and

WHEREAS, Ramon Mendez's commitment to excellence, and his spirit of
humanity, carried over into all fields of enterprise, including
charitable and civic endeavors; and

WHEREAS, Dedicated to the local youth, Ramon Mendez was active in
the Lackawanna Boys Baseball Association for 30 years, serving as Coach,
Manager, Rules Committee Chairman, Financial Secretary and Vice
President; and

WHEREAS, Additionally, he was a Founding and Charter Member of the
Lackawanna Little Loop Football League and held the position of both
Coach and Financial Secretary; and

WHEREAS, Furthermore, Ramon Mendez served as Governor of the West
Seneca Moose Lodge, Treasurer of the Spanish Club of Lackawanna,
Chairman of the Lackawanna Zoning Board and was a member of the
Limestone Club; and

WHEREAS, In 1997, the City of Lackawanna and Erie County honored
Ramon Mendez for his service to the Lackawanna youth; and

WHEREAS, Ramon Mendez is survived by his wife, Patricia; five sons,
Robert, Brian, Thomas, Paul and Peter; a daughter, Kerri Miller; two
brothers, Moses Jr. and George; a sister, Olivia Padilla; 14
grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, Ramon Mendez leaves behind a legacy which will long endure
the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory to all he
served and befriended; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of Ramon Mendez, beloved father, friend, distinguished
citizen and devoted member of his community; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of Ramon Mendez.
