COMMEMORATING the 90th Anniversary of the Dunham
Public Library on October 28, 2016
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that
the quality and character of life in the communities across the great
State of New York is reflective of certain exemplary institutions whose
purpose is dedicated to serving the community and the needs of its
citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 90th Anniversary of the Dunham Public Library; this
momentous occasion will be celebrated with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on
Friday, October 28, 2016; and
WHEREAS, A local newspaper editor and civic minded citizen, George
Earl Dunham became a major leader of the Greater Utica area at the turn
of the twentieth century; upon his death in 1923, his will designated
his father's estate to be used as a public library; and
WHEREAS, In 1927, Dunham Public Library was chartered and
incorporated as a free public library serving the Union Free School
District of Whitesboro; and
WHEREAS, Ten years later, Dunham Public Library was rechartered as a
public library serving the geographical area of the Whitesboro Central
School District, a service area encompassing Deerfield, Marcy, Schuyler,
Whitesboro and Yorkville; and
WHEREAS, Today, the Dunham Public Library is located on Main Street
in Whitesboro, New York, and is a member of the Mid-York Cooperative
Library System; the Library provides all people within the community and
surrounding areas the means to avail themselves of the knowledge of
information they seek; and
WHEREAS, Remaining true to its mission, the Dunham Public Library
promotes reading, knowledge, cultural enrichment, and a sense of
community by providing its patrons with information resources, programs,
friendly staff assistance, and an inviting place, equally accessible to
all, in which to exchange ideas; and
WHEREAS, Steeped in a proud and distinguished history, the Dunham
Public Library may take just pride in its purposeful growth, as it looks
forward to continuing to serve the educational, cultural and
intellectual needs of the community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 90th Anniversary of the Dunham Public Library; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Dunham Public Library.
