COMMEMORATING the 100th Anniversary of The L.C.
Whitford Company, Inc.
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize those
organizations that enhance the quality and character of life in the
communities across New York State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
congratulate The L.C. Whitford Company, Inc. on its 100th Anniversary;
and
WHEREAS, Over the past 100 years, this prestigious organization
continues to expand and grow; above all else it remains a well-operated
family-owned business, consisting of loyal fourth generation employees;
and
WHEREAS, Langford Clinton Whitford started L.C. Whitford in 1916,
with a steadfast commitment to innovation, quality and safety; when he
passed in 1940, his son Langford Rodman "Rod" Whitford took over until
his death in 1969; Rod's son, Chan Whitford, assumed the company's
management responsibilities in 1969, and later appointed his son, Brad,
as the President, and his other son, Daniel Whitford, as the General
Manager of the L.C. Whitford Materials Company; and
WHEREAS, The L.C. Whitford Company, Inc., is a general contracting
company that specializes in bridge construction, operating primarily in
New York and Pennsylvania, with a second division in Atlanta, Georgia;
and
WHEREAS, The L.C. Whitford Company, Inc. has taken several risks
that have positively benefited the business and secured them to be an
even greater success in their next 100 years; and
WHEREAS, In 1972, when Hurricane Agnes struck the Wellsville region,
many local bridges were washed out from the flooding which caused L.C.
Whitford to transition from commercial building to bridge construction;
the company built, or rebuilt, more than 1,000 bridges, including the
2,600-foot twin bridges on I-86 near St. Bonaventure in Allegany, and
the $20 million rehab project in Buffalo on the Scajaquada; and
WHEREAS, The L.C. Whitford Company, Inc. has built some of the most
majestic buildings in the region, including the David A. Howe Public
Library, on Main Street, in Wellsville, New York; and
WHEREAS, In 1995, several L.C. Whitford employees made a commitment
to the company leaving their hometowns in New York to take a risk as the
company expanded into Atlanta, prior to the 1996 Olympics; success would
follow in Atlanta where the company realized there would be other
opportunities in other states; and
WHEREAS, Over the years, what has distinguished L.C. Whitford from
others in the same field is they continue to self-perform a majority of
the work including: driving piles, erecting structural steel,
manufacturing their own pre-stress components, and fabricating their own
reinforcing bars; and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to publicly
recognize those organizations that have achieved notable success in
their service to the residents and communities of this great Empire
State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of The L.C. Whitford Company, Inc.;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Whitford Family.
