MOURNING the death of Delivan W. Gates,
distinguished citizen and devoted member of his
community
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavor
served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and the great
State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Affectionately known as Augie, Delivan W. Gates of Vestal,
New York, died on October 21, 2017, at the age of 83; and
WHEREAS, Augie Gates was a graduate of Watkins Glen High School
where he excelled in many sports; he went on to play lacrosse and
football at Hobart College, graduating in 1956; and
WHEREAS, Upon the completion of his studies, Augie Gates proudly
served his nation as a United States Marine Corp Captain for five years;
during this time, he and his wife Helen started their family at Camp
Lejeune in North Carolina; and
WHEREAS, Augie Gates worked as an Engineer for the Rochester Phone
Company in Geneseo, New York, before moving to Vestal in 1964; he spent
his illustrious career in the Asphalt Industry for more than 50 years,
30 of which as the proud owner of Broome Bituminous Products; and
WHEREAS, Augie Gates's commitment to excellence, and his spirit of
humanity, carried over into all fields of enterprise, including
charitable and civic endeavors; and
WHEREAS, A true asset to his community, Augie Gates was a member of
the Watkins Glen Elks Club and a past president of the Vestal Kiwanis
Club; he served as president of the Geneganslet Lake Association and was
a former board member of the New York State Asphalt Pavement
Association; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Augie Gates was an early Director of the
Vestal Youth Football league, a Vestal Recreation board member and
served on the Vestal planning board for many years; he belonged to Our
Lady of Sorrows Church for 52 years, where he served as an Usher with
many of his close friends; and
WHEREAS, An avid golfer and tennis player, Augie Gates enjoyed
playing throughout the winter months in Stuart, Florida; he also enjoyed
spending his summers at Geneganslet Lake with his family, fishing and
boating; and
WHEREAS, Augie Gates was a loving husband and father who was proud
of his family; he was a generous man who regularly supported local youth
sports; he was a man of honor and integrity who will be greatly missed
by his family, friends and everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him;
and
WHEREAS, Predeceased by his parents, Delivan and Lela Gates, and a
niece, Gail Marie, Augie Gates is survived by his beloved wife of 60
years, Helen; five children, Seana, Michael (Mary Jo), Christopher
(Cheryl), Daniel (Karen) and KellyAnne; 10 grandchildren, Christine and
(Sean), Elizabeth, Matthew, Brent (Olga), Christian, Benjamin, Erika,
Lauren, Carlyne and Natalie; four great-grandchildren, SJ, Rogan,
Brooklyn and Alex; a sister, Marlene; sister-in-law, Pat; and
brothers-in-law, Harry and Frank (Elizabeth); as well as many nieces and
nephews; and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, Augie Gates leaves behind a legacy which will long endure
the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory to all he
served and befriended; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of Delivan W. Gates, distinguished citizen and devoted
member of his community; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of Delivan W. Gates.
