COMMENDING the Dansville Ambulance Company, Inc.
upon the occasion of celebrating its 50th
Anniversary

WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to recognize and
honor ambulance departments and their members who have exhibited great
dedication, courage and selflessness in providing emergency medical
services in this great Empire State; and

WHEREAS, The emergency medical service providers of New York State
are renowned throughout the Nation; their reputation is synonymous with
excellence in the arduous field of providing medical assistance to those
in need; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commend the Dansville Ambulance Company, Inc. upon the occasion of
celebrating its 50th Anniversary; and

WHEREAS, Volunteer emergency medical personnel not only provide the
critical service of medical care, but also engage in other activities of
great benefit and importance to the communities they serve; and

WHEREAS, In 1968, a group from the Dansville Fire Department decided
to establish an ambulance squad; the first official meeting of the new
squad took place on October 20, 1968, and accepted the operations of the
ambulance in the Town of Dansville; and

WHEREAS, The Dansville Ambulance Company, Inc. initially had a squad
of approximately 60 men from all four companies of the Dansville Fire
Department, which included: Protectives, Union Hose, Jackson Hose, and
Hook and Ladder Companies; the Dansville Ambulance Company was under the
command of its first Captain, the late John Welch; and

WHEREAS, The Dansville Ambulance Company, Inc.'s first ambulance was
a Ford Station Wagon and was housed behind the Hook and Ladder truck in
the North Dansville Town Hall and would later move to the Union Hose
Truck House on Ossian Street; in 1971, a permanent ambulance garage was
built on 15 Ossian Street, and the building was dedicated to John
"Nipper" Welch; and

WHEREAS, In 1970, the Dansville Ambulance Company, Inc. responded to
more than 500 calls, and by 1979, there was a presented need for more
volunteers and to recruit individuals who may not wish to be
firefighters; the Dansville Fire Department Ambulance Company was
inaugurated as the official fifth company of the Dansville Fire
Department; and

WHEREAS, Over the decades, the Dansville Ambulance Company, Inc. has
grown and always looks ahead to the future on how the company can meet
new challenges that are presented; and

WHEREAS, In 1995, the estate of Frances Woolever and Emma Evans left
the Dansville Ambulance Company close to a quarter of a million dollars;
an opportunity to construct a base of operations for the ambulance that
would have enough room for meeting and training activities; in early
1996, a plan for a new base would begin with a preliminary location
being at the corner of Main and Knox Streets; in August of 1996, plans
were released for a new ambulance base to be located on a vacant lot at
18 Ossian Street, and September 28, 1997, a ground breaking ceremony was
held at the site of the new ambulance base; a ribbon cutting ceremony
for the new ambulance base took place on May 16, 1998; and

WHEREAS, It takes a special dedication, a strong desire to help
others, and a tireless sense of community to forsake precious time with
family and friends to carry out the vital mission of volunteer ambulance
corporations; and

WHEREAS, Observing that special recognition should be given to those
who work so assiduously for the betterment of their communities, and
that they should be acknowledged publicly for their heroic good works as
volunteer emergency medical service providers in this great Empire
State; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Dansville Ambulance Company, Inc. upon the occasion of
celebrating its 50th Anniversary; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Dansville Ambulance Company, Inc.
