COMMENDING William P. Doherty upon the occasion of
his designation as the Grand Marshal of the 30th
Annual Glen Cove St. Patrick's Day Parade on March
18, 2018
WHEREAS, St. Patrick's Day is a time for people of all nationalities
and generations to assemble and celebrate the rich culture and heritage
of the Irish people throughout the United States; and
WHEREAS, A St. Patrick's Day parade reflects and records the ongoing
history of the United States and Ireland, and provides opportunity for
people of all generations to assemble in ethnic pride and pageantry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commend William P. Doherty upon the occasion of his designation as the
Grand Marshal of the 30th Annual Glen Cove St. Patrick's Day Parade on
Sunday, March 18, 2018; and
WHEREAS, A man of singular distinction, William P. Doherty has
continually demonstrated extreme competence, extraordinary intelligence
and diligent leadership in his unwavering service to his community and
profession and subsequently has been selected for this most prestigious
accolade; and
WHEREAS, William "Bill" P. Doherty was born on May 1, 1950, in
Russiansicle, Cheekpoint, County Waterford to Andrew and Nancy Doherty;
he was raised in a small cottage with his four older sisters, Elizabeth,
Agnes, Brigid, and Ann; and
WHEREAS, As a child, William P. Doherty lived near the River Suir
and worked on the salmon and herring boats that plied their fishing
trade in small fishing villages alongside the River Suir Estuary; and
WHEREAS, On March 18, 1972, William P. Doherty married his wife,
Teresa, at St John's Church in Waterford City; in October of 1972, the
couple immigrated to the United States, and lived with his sister,
Brigid, on Long Island; and
WHEREAS, William P. and Teresa Doherty then moved to Saint James,
New York, where their son was born; three years later, the family
settled in Glen Cove, and William became a Parishioner at St. Patrick's
Catholic Church; shortly thereafter, he was initiated into the Ancient
Order of Hibernians (AOH) Division 8; and
WHEREAS, William P. Doherty was employed by Daniello and Son in
Locust Valley, New York; and
WHEREAS, In 1989, William P. Doherty and his fellow AOH members
initiated a St. Patrick's Day Parade in Glen Cove; the only Hibernian
sponsored parade in Nassau County, it has grown to become a premier
celebration of Irish heritage and culture on the North Shore; and
WHEREAS, After many years of renting, the Doherty family purchased
their dream home in Bayville, New York; and
WHEREAS, William P. Doherty continued to be an active member of the
AOH Division 8, serving as its President from 1990-1992; he
enthusiastically worked at many events such as the Project Children
Paddleboat Steamer Cruise and the Coney Island Irish Festival, and was
always willing to assist young Irish immigrants who had just moved to
America; and
WHEREAS, In February of 2005, William P. Doherty and his wife
returned to Ireland to manage the Saratoga Bar on the scenic strand of
Woodstown, County in Waterford; for 11 years, they ran the famous bar,
and were known for their kindness and warm hospitality; and
WHEREAS, In 2016, William P. Doherty and his wife moved back to the
Gold Coast; today, he works part time with his nephews at Winter Bros.
Waste Systems, one of the largest private sanitation companies on Long
Island; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the occurrence of such a compassionate
blending of strength, intellect and commitment as that demonstrated by
William P. Doherty over a lifetime of sacrifice and dedication to
others; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his wife of 46 years, Teresa;
their three children, Ryan, Tara Ann, and Andrew John; and seven
grandchildren, all of whom will proudly march alongside the family
patriarch as he leads the great Glen Cove St. Patrick's Day Parade down
the streets of his hometown; and
WHEREAS, A fitting choice for Grand Marshal of the 30th Annual Glen
Cove St. Patrick's Day Parade, William P. Doherty embodies the spirit
and the cherished ideals and values of Irish-Americans of this great
State and Nation; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend William P. Doherty upon the occasion of his designation as the
Grand Marshal of the 30th Annual Glen Cove St. Patrick's Day Parade on
March 18, 2018; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to William P. Doherty.
