COMMENDING Dr. Gary J. Sherman upon the occasion
of his designation for special recognition by the
Federation of Italian-American Organizations of
Brooklyn, Ltd. on April 8, 2018
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize that
the quality and character of life in the communities across New York
State are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those
individuals who would devote themselves to the welfare of the community
and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commend Dr. Gary J. Sherman upon the occasion of his designation for
special recognition by the Federation of Italian-American Organizations
of Brooklyn, Ltd., to be celebrated at its 41st Annual Gala on Sunday,
April 8, 2018; and
WHEREAS, For the last 43 years, the Federation of Italian-American
Organizations of Brooklyn, Ltd. has stayed true to its mission of
promoting unity in its multi-cultural community; this vital organization
strives to instill and preserve the highest ideal of Americanism,
provide mutual assistance and encourage greater participation; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Gary J. Sherman was born to Dr. Ben and Helen Sherman
in Brooklyn, New York, where he attended Lafayette High School; he
earned his undergraduate degree from Upsala College, and his medical
degree from the Pennsylvania College of Podiatric Medicine; he
successfully completed his post graduate residency at the Jewish
Memorial Hospital in Manhattan; and
WHEREAS, For more than 40 years, Dr. Gary J. Sherman has specialized
in podiatric medicine and surgery in both Brooklyn and Manhattan; during
this time, he has served as Director of Podiatry at several hospitals
including New York Downtown Hospital, Richmond University Medical Center
and Maimonides Hospital; and
WHEREAS, In addition to his valuable work at various hospitals, Dr.
Gary J. Sherman serves as an adjunct Clinical Professor at the New York
College of Podiatric Medicine; throughout his distinguished career, he
has shared his superior skills and vast knowledge with hundreds of
students, and thereby helped create outstanding and compassionate new
doctors; and
WHEREAS, Dedicated to the community in which he lives and works, Dr.
Gary J. Sherman has served on multiple charitable boards such as the
Council of Jewish Organizations for the past 10 years; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Gary J. Sherman and his brother, Mark, have been
instrumental in the continued growth of The Unity Games, which has used
basketball as a platform to promote racial tolerance amongst thousands
of young men and women during the past 16 years; and
WHEREAS, A true humanitarian, Dr. Gary J. Sherman participated in
medical relief efforts during the aftermath of the Haitian earthquake;
upon his return, he organized additional medical teams to continue where
his team left off, and obtained financial support for their journey, as
well as transportation; for his participation in this humanitarian act,
he has been the recipient of multiple awards; and
WHEREAS, When he is not working or helping someone, Dr. Gary J.
Sherman can often be found fishing on his boat, The Helen, or in a cold
trout stream with his many friends and family members; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his wife, Lyn Kohls, and
their daughter, Samantha, both of whom have shown support and rejoice in
his many achievements; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an
individual for the benefit of others which Dr. Gary J. Sherman has
displayed throughout his life; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the quality of life in their community and have shown a long and
sustained commitment to the maintenance of high standards in their
profession, certainly have earned the recognition and applause of all
the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Dr. Gary J. Sherman upon the occasion of his designation for
special recognition by the Federation of Italian-American Organizations
of Brooklyn, Ltd.; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Dr. Gary J. Sherman.
