COMMEMORATING the 100th Anniversary of Steuben
County Public Health to be celebrated on June 8,
2018
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to commend those
organizations that work to serve the health care needs of citizens of
the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of Steuben County Public Health to be
celebrated on Friday, June 8, 2018, at Finger Lakes Boating Museum,
Hammondsport, New York; and
WHEREAS, Steuben County Public Health and Nursing Services was
established in 1918, when a Tuberculosis (TB) nurse was appointed to
Steuben County in an effort to prevent the spread of this infectious
disease; and
WHEREAS, On January 1, 1928, the work of the county nurse was
changed from a Tuberculosis Program to general Public Health Nursing,
which now included TB, the care of infants, new mothers, communicable
disease, preschool and school follow-up; and
WHEREAS, By the late 1950s, the role of Steuben County Public Health
expanded to include Clinical Services and Home Service, providing health
education, as well as assisting with the interpretation of physician's
orders and the deliverance of nursing care; and
WHEREAS, After many years of home health services with offices
located in Bath, Corning, and Hornell, New York, Steuben County Public
Health and Nursing Services concluded their home health care program in
May of 2013; and
WHEREAS, Subsequently, "Nursing Services" was dropped from the
department's name, and Steuben County Public Health was rebranded using
the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO)
Public Health logo; and
WHEREAS, Today, Steuben County Public Health provides clinic
services, preventative services, health education, and services for
children with special healthcare needs; and
WHEREAS, In addition, this vital organization offers programming for
immunizations, radon, lead poisoning prevention, rabies, communicable
disease, emergency preparedness, early intervention, car seat safety,
chronic disease prevention, maternal and child health, and more; and
WHEREAS, Over the last 100 years, Steuben County Public Health has
created and maintained strong partnerships with many health
organizations in the community for the betterment of the health of its
residents; and
WHEREAS, The success of Steuben County Public Health is in direct
correlation to the efforts of its staff whose involvement is, and always
has been, characterized by an impressive commitment, an unbridled
enthusiasm, and an uncompromising standard of excellence in all
endeavors on behalf of the organization and the community it serves; and
WHEREAS, This auspicious occasion presents an opportunity for this
Legislative Body to recognize and pay tribute to Steuben County Public
Health; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when
individuals and organizations of such noble aims and accomplishments are
brought to our attention, they should be celebrated and recognized by
all the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of Steuben County Public Health to be
celebrated on June 8, 2018; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Steuben County Public Health, Bath, New York.
