COMMEMORATING the 200th Anniversary of the Town of
Shelby, New York, in Orleans County
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor and
commemorate the distinguished histories of the communities which
comprise the noble body of this great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the Town of Shelby, New York, in
Orleans County; and
WHEREAS, The Town of Shelby, New York, was formed on March 6, 1818,
from the Town of Ridgeway and Genesee County by an Act of the New York
State Legislature; Shelby was named in honor of Governor Isaac Shelby,
the first and fifth Governor of the State of Kentucky; and
WHEREAS, The Town of Shelby encompasses 46.3 miles and is located in
the southwest corner of Orleans County; the Town is comprised of the
hamlets of Shelby Center, East Shelby, West Shelby, Shelby Basin and
Millville; the southern half of the Village of Medina is located in the
Town of Shelby and the county seat is in Albion, New York; and
WHEREAS, Of the County's 42,235 residents, approximately 5,319
people call the Town of Shelby home; and
WHEREAS, The citizens of Shelby work at various manufacturing,
industrial and multi-generational farming operations, and proudly
support Iroquois Job Corps, and the Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge;
town officials diligently work to protect the wildlife and wild lands in
the refuge and are committed to safeguarding this shelter for all
species; and
WHEREAS, Remaining fruitful over the ebb and flow of decades of
growth and change, the Town of Shelby continues its commitment to
enhancing the quality of life of its citizens, ensuring a positive
business, institutional and educational climate, and providing all
essential services; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the Town of Shelby, New York,
recognizing the significance of the role it continues to play in the
life of the community of the State of New York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Ed Houseknecht, Supervisor, Town of Shelby.
