COMMEMORATING the 200th Anniversary of the Town of
Hope, New York, to be celebrated on April 15, 2018
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor and
commemorate the distinguished histories of the communities which
comprise the noble body of this great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the Town of Hope, New York, to be
recognized with the Hope Bicentennial Birthday on Sunday, April 15,
2018, at the Alpine; and
WHEREAS, One of the oldest communities in Hamilton County, the Town
of Hope was a land largely uninhabited when John Bergen and 23
associates purchased 19,589 acres from the Mohawk Indians on July 3,
1772; and
WHEREAS, The Town of Hope was settled in the early 1790s and
succeeded from Wells in 1818 to form its own town; and
WHEREAS, Located in the Adirondacks, the Town of Hope is 41.6 square
miles of which 40.7 miles are land and 0.9 square miles are water; and
WHEREAS, Largely undeveloped with glistening lakes and streams,
rolling hills and peaceful valleys, the Town of Hope is appealing to
outdoorsman, hunters, fishermen, hikers, recreational enthusiasts, and
those seeking a tranquil and friendly place to live; and
WHEREAS, With the Sacandaga River flowing through the western part
of Hope, tourism has remained an important industry, and New York Route
30, which runs through the town, has provided travelers with lodging,
gas stations and other amenities; and
WHEREAS, Of historic origin, and remaining fruitful over the ebb and
flow of decades of growth and change, the Town of Hope continues to
provide the quintessential quality of life for its residents; and
WHEREAS, The residents of the Town of Hope have a bright outlook for
the future of their community, which remains a beautiful place in which
to live and raise a family; and
WHEREAS, In recognition of the Town of Hope's rich history and
enduring contribution to the State of New York, this Legislative Body is
proud to pay tribute to this spirited town upon the occasion of its
200th Anniversary; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the Town of Hope, New York, to be
celebrated on April 15, 2018; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Steven M. Tomlinson, Supervisor, Town of Hope.
