HONORING Lynn M. Thornton upon the occasion of her
designation as recipient of the 2017 Citizen of the
Year Award by the Carthage Elks Lodge 1762 and the
Carthage Area Chamber of Commerce on May 2, 2018

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
honor those distinguished citizens who would devote their life's work
and purpose to community service, contributing to the welfare of the
citizens of their communities and this great Empire State; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Lynn M. Thornton upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of
the 2017 Citizen of the Year Award by the Carthage Elks Lodge 1762 and
the Carthage Area Chamber of Commerce, to be celebrated at a dinner held
in her honor on Wednesday, May 2, 2018, at the Carthage Elks Lodge; and

WHEREAS, Lynn M. Thornton, a retired school teacher for the Carthage
Central School District, has volunteered her time for the past 12 years
serving as the historian for the Town of Champion, sharing her love of
history and her understanding of the importance of preserving the past;
and

WHEREAS, In this capacity, Lynn M. Thornton has written grants,
undertaken research for various individuals, set up exhibits in town
offices, aided in the recognition of Revolutionary War soldiers buried
in the Champion cemetery, and presented historical programs to schools,
Boy Scout Troops and other community groups; and

WHEREAS, Her volunteer efforts have also included contributions to
Champion's comprehensive plan update, helping in the planning of the
July 4th Champion Old Home Day, and assisting North Country Public Radio
in a documentary about working in the Adirondack Mountains; and

WHEREAS, Lynn M. Thornton has also served as vice-president of 4
River Valleys Historical Society and has spearheaded renovation of the
Hiram Hubbard Homestead in Champion; and

WHEREAS, She is also an accomplished author and has written several
books about the history of the Carthage area as well as a guide for a
walking tour of sites connected to the great Carthage fire of 1884,
which destroyed the downtown area of the Village of Carthage; and

WHEREAS, This esteemed and accomplished woman is energetic and
positive about her community, always willing to lend a hand to help with
any community need; and

WHEREAS, It has always been the objective of this Legislative Body
to honor and support those individuals who have displayed their
commitment to the betterment of their communities; and

WHEREAS, In keeping with this objective, this Legislative Body
inscribes upon its records, this tribute to Lynn M. Thornton, that

future generations may know and appreciate her admirable character, her
many benevolent deeds, and the respect and esteem in which she is held;
now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Lynn M. Thornton upon the occasion of her designation as
recipients of the 2017 Citizen of the Year Award by the Carthage Elks
Lodge 1762 and the Carthage Area Chamber of Commerce on May 2, 2018; and
be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Lynn M. Thornton.
