COMMENDING the Kiwanis Club of Troy, New York,
upon the occasion of celebrating its 100th
Anniversary on October 29, 2016

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
pay tribute to those fraternal organizations of high purpose and worthy
accomplishment whose endeavors have faithfully served the welfare of the
citizens of the State of New York; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commend the Kiwanis Club of Troy, New York, upon the occasion of
celebrating its 100th Anniversary, to be feted during a weekend
Centennial Celebration on Friday, October 28, 2016, and Saturday,
October 29, 2016; and

WHEREAS, Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to
changing the world, one child and one community at a time; and

WHEREAS, The six permanent objects of Kiwanis International are to:
give primacy to the human and spiritual rather than to the material
values of life; encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all
human relationships; promote the adoption and the application of higher
social, business, and professional standards; develop, by precept and
example, a more intelligent, aggressive, and serviceable citizenship;
provide, through Kiwanis clubs, a practical means to form enduring
friendships, to render altruistic service, and to build better
communities; and cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public
opinion and high idealism which make possible the increase of
righteousness, justice, patriotism, and goodwill; and

WHEREAS, For a Century, the dedicated men and women of the Kiwanis
Club of Troy, New York, have served the City of Troy and Rensselaer
County by serving the children of the world; Kiwanis is a family affair
that connects three or more generations; and

WHEREAS, The Kiwanis Club of Troy, New York, was formed on October
25, 1916, and is one of the oldest Kiwanis Clubs in the world; the Club
represents a variety of age groups, and the diverse charter members have
come from all walks of life including business, government, medical,
public safety and religious; and

WHEREAS, Through the years, several members of the Kiwanis Club of
Troy, New York, held leadership positions at both the Division and
District Levels; in 1926, Gordon L. Hayes held the position of Past
Governor of the New York District, and in 1963, George H. Prout held the
position of Honorary Past Governor of the New York District; numerous
members also served as Lieutenant Governors of the Van Rensselaer
Division; and

WHEREAS, Today, under the luminous leadership of President Olivia
Prout, the Kiwanis Club of Troy, New York, serves the children of the
City of Troy and Rensselaer County by supporting local community

organizations, volunteering, fundraising and sending children to Kamp
Kiwanis; and

WHEREAS, Focusing on the youth of its communities in and around
Rensselaer County, the Kiwanis Club of Troy, New York, presently
sponsors a K-Kids Club at Carroll Hill Elementary School, a Builder's
Club at Troy Middle School, and Kiwanis Service Clubs, called Key Clubs,
at Troy High School and Tamarac High School; and

WHEREAS, In addition, the Kiwanis Club of Troy, New York, sponsors
Circle-K Clubs at both Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Russell Sage
College; and

WHEREAS, The Kiwanis Club of Troy, New York, is being recognized for
its contribution to the communities of Troy and the greater Rensselaer
County; its weekend Centennial Celebration includes a Bowl-a-thon, a
Card Making and Stars for Our Troops Service Project, and a Centennial
Gala at Franklin Terrace, Troy, New York; and

WHEREAS, This auspicious occasion presents a unique opportunity for
this Legislative Body to recognize and pay tribute to the Troy Kiwanis
Club; and

WHEREAS, Organizations of singular distinction such as the Kiwanis
Club of Troy, New York, provide a model for enhancing the quality of
life in the community and, as such, merit the grateful praise of the
community of the State of New York; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Kiwanis Club of Troy, New York, upon the occasion of
celebrating its 100th Anniversary; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to President Olivia Prout, Kiwanis Club of Troy, New York.
