HONORING Estelle Adelman upon the occasion of her
designation as recipient of the 2018 Harry Yates
Volunteer of the Year Award by the Orchard Park
Historical Society on June 11, 2018
WHEREAS, The unity of our State and Nation is built upon the
compassion of individuals such as Estelle Adelman who uphold the values
of community life and who, through their great actions, epitomize the
best of humanity; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Estelle
Adelman upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of the 2018
Harry Yates Volunteer of the Year Award by the Orchard Park Historical
Society, to be celebrated at its Annual Summer Picnic on Monday, June
11, 2018, at Hillcrest Fire Company, Orchard Park, New York; and
WHEREAS, The Harry Yates Volunteer of the Year Award is given
annually to a member of the Orchard Park Historical Society who has
shown true dedication to the organization and has actively contributed
to the welfare of the society; Estelle Adelman is one such individual;
and
WHEREAS, A native of Long Island and a graduate of the SUNY Oswego,
Estelle Adelman moved to Orchard Park from Baldwinsville, New York, with
her now-late husband, Fritz, in 1969; a mother of four, she was a
substitute teacher in the Orchard Park School District until 1983; and
WHEREAS, Estelle Adelman began her long and dedicated career serving
her community in 1990, when she started volunteering at Orchard Park
Presbyterian Church as a publicist on the outreach commission; and
WHEREAS, In this capacity, Estelle Adelman wrote articles and
monitored shut-ins, sending them holiday cards at Christmas and Easter;
she also planned welcoming receptions for new church members and served
as the wardrobe manager for the church's annual Journey to Bethlehem
celebration; and
WHEREAS, With a steadfast and unwavering commitment to her
community, Estelle Adelman has volunteered with the American Red Cross,
Upstate New York Transplant Services and the Erie County Retired and
Senior Volunteer Program; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, after 13 years of transporting members of the
community to doctor and dentist appointments, shopping and social
events, Estelle Adelman retired from her volunteer position as a driver
for the Rural Transit Service in 2016; and
WHEREAS, For 28 years, Estelle Adelman has been a member of the
Friends of the Orchard Park Library, where she supervises the rare and
out-of-print book sales and assists in many of the library's
initiatives; additionally, she was instrumental in securing underwriting
for the digitization of more than 30 years' worth of Orchard Park
newspapers, which can now be accessed on library computers; and
WHEREAS, This extraordinary woman has served the Orchard Park
Historical Society for nearly two decades, during which time she has
been involved in just about every aspect of the society, including
serving as secretary, chairing the annual lawn sale, organizing a quilt
show, the Jolls Baby Bash and acting as a docent during open house
events at the Jolls House Museum; and
WHEREAS, Estelle Adelman remains present at the biannual
housecleaning events at the Jolls House Museum and worked to establish
the celebration of Millie Michelfelder's birthday in 2016; she has also
been a driving force behind the society's annual entry in the Erie
County Fair Historical Buildings contest; and
WHEREAS, In June of 2012, Estelle Adelman coordinated the dedication
of a new headstone at the Duells Corners Cemetery for Revolutionary War
veteran Corporal Jotham Bemus Jr.; she most recently coordinated the
exhibit, Honoring All Who Served, at the Orchard Park Library during the
2017 Veterans Day weekend; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an
individual for the benefit of others which Estelle Adelman has displayed
throughout her life; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when
individuals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our
attention, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens
of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Estelle Adelman upon the occasion of her designation as recipient
of the 2018 Harry Yates Volunteer of the Year Award by the Orchard Park
Historical Society on June 11, 2018; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Estelle Adelman.
