COMMEMORATING the 20th Anniversary of the Flushing
Library on June 30, 2018
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that
the quality and character of life in the communities across the great
State of New York is reflective of certain exemplary institutions whose
purpose is dedicated to serving the community and the needs of its
citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the Flushing Library on Saturday,
June 30, 2018; and
WHEREAS, Located on Kissena Boulevard and Main Street, the Flushing
Library is the largest and busiest community library in New York State;
this four-level, 76,000-square foot facility hosts 1.8 million visitors
per year; and
WHEREAS, The Flushing Library houses more than 365,000 library
items, state-of-the-art electronic information resources, a Job
information Center, a 223-seat auditorium, multiple meeting rooms, and
an Adult Learning Center; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, the Library is an institution which includes
endeavors to increase adult literacy, and hosts numerous community
cultural events; and
WHEREAS, The top level of the Flushing Library is home to the
International Resource Center, which provides resources, information and
referrals to customers who wish to know more about the cultures and
languages of the world; additionally, it houses international books,
newspapers and magazines and includes special collections; and
WHEREAS, With the largest children's room in the Queens Library
System, the Flushing Library attracts more than 5,000 people every day,
and circulation is currently approximately 200,000 per month; and
WHEREAS, The Flushing Library has been the recipient of numerous
awards and accolades, including the 2001 Honor Award for Architecture by
the American Institute of Architects; its Multi-Cultural Center was also
recognized as Institutional Project of the Year by New York Construction
News; and
WHEREAS, Steeped in a proud and distinguished history, the Flushing
Library may take just pride in its purposeful growth, as it looks
forward to continuing to serve the educational, cultural and
intellectual needs of the community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the Flushing Library June 30, 2018;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Flushing Library.
