COMMEMORATING the 50th Anniversary of the
Schechter School of Long Island on March 30, 2017
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend those institutions of commitment and high achievement whose
purpose and endeavor have been dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in
the education of the youth of this noble Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Schechter School of Long Island,
to be celebrated on Thursday, March 30, 2017, at Old Westbury Hebrew
Congregation, Old Westbury, New York; and
WHEREAS, The Schechter School of Long Island is a vibrant
Kindergarten through grade 12 Jewish Day School whose dual curriculum of
excellence educates and empowers its students to be critical thinkers,
ethical leaders, and globally engaged citizens, striving to achieve
their full potential and ensuring a vibrant Jewish future; and
WHEREAS, Powered by a curriculum of Torah, Science, Technology,
Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics (T-STEAM), students see links
between Maimonides and mathematics, Socrates and social justice, Torah
and technology, anthropology, art and athletics, Hebrew language and
history; and
WHEREAS, The Schechter School of Long Island is a true community
where every child feels valued and develops deep empathy; students also
gain a powerful unified sense of themselves as citizens and as leaders,
as Zionists and Patriots, ready and excited to engage the world; and
WHEREAS, The Schechter School of Long Island's reputation for
primary and middle school excellence began in 1967, with the high school
opening its doors in 1994 to great acclaim; its students achieve the
highest standards and gain acceptance to some of our nation's finest
colleges and universities; and
WHEREAS, While taking on great academic and intellectual challenges,
the students of the Schechter School of Long Island live out the Jewish
ideal described by its namesake, 19th century scholar Rabbi Solomon
Schechter, that "Judaism permeates the whole of your life"; and
WHEREAS, At the Schechter School of Long Island, the morals, ethics
and beliefs of a dynamic Jewish life are core to its students'
intellectual, social and spiritual growth, compassion for community,
love for Israel and the Jewish people, and commitment to social
responsibility; and
WHEREAS, Through its long and sustained commitment to excellence in
educational endeavor, the Schechter School of Long Island has so clearly
advanced that spirit of united purpose and shared concern which is the
unalterable manifestation of our American experience; and
WHEREAS, The schools of a community mirror the character and values
of the society in which they function; the residents, Board of
Education, administration, faculty and students of Schechter School of
Long Island may justifiably take great pride in its past achievements,
present recognition and legacy of excellence afforded to future
generations of the community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Schechter School of Long Island,
noting the propriety of its goals, the constancy of its commitment and
the significance of its accomplishments in preparing the youth of today
and leaders of tomorrow; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Schechter School of Long Island.
