CONGRATULATING P.S. 242, the Leonard P. Stavisky
Early Childhood School, upon the occasion of being
named a National Blue Ribbon School by the United
States Department of Education
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend and pay
tribute to those institutions that by achieving outstanding success in
their educational programs have inspired and brought pride to our
community and State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
congratulate P.S. 242, the Leonard P. Stavisky Early Childhood School,
upon the occasion of being named a National Blue Ribbon School by the
United States Department of Education; and
WHEREAS, For the past 16 years, P.S. 242, the Leonard P. Stavisky
Early Childhood School, has provided a nurturing environment in which
every child can succeed and where staff, parents students and the
community all work together to promote a positive educational experience
for all children; and
WHEREAS, Seeking to have the students develop a love of learning, P.
S. 242 encourages extensive parent involvement because studies have
shown that the key to a child's success, improved learning, better
social skills and attendance rely on their active participation; and
WHEREAS, Teaching its student body from pre-K to third grade, the
standards-based instruction is augmented by activities such as family
fun nights, concerts, field trips, student of the month, book fairs, and
math and literacy enrichment activities; and
WHEREAS, In November of 2016, P.S. 242 was recognized as a Blue
Ribbon School by the United States Secretary of Education, one of only
279 public schools in the entire country to receive this distinction;
and
WHEREAS, The National Blue Ribbon Schools Award affirms the hard
work of students, educators, families, and communities in creating safe
and welcoming schools where students master challenging content; and
WHEREAS, The National Blue Ribbon Flag gracing a school building is
a widely recognized symbol of exemplary teaching and learning and serves
as a model for schools still striving for excellence; and
WHEREAS, The school was named in honor of Dr. Leonard P. Stavisky, a
college professor who represented Flushing in the New York State
legislature for nearly 35 years; he was a staunch advocate for
excellence in New York's schools; and
WHEREAS, The National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence Award stands
as a resolute testimony to P.S. 242, the Leonard P. Stavisky Early
Childhood School's standards of excellence, its uncompromising values,
unparalleled dedication, and the special teamwork of its family of
students, parents, teachers and administrators, who share common goals
and uncommon expectations; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate P.S. 242, the Leonard P. Stavisky Early Childhood School,
upon the occasion of being named a National Blue Ribbon School; and be
it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Patricia Costa, Principal of P.S. 242, the Leonard P.
Stavisky Early Childhood School; former Principal Vivian DeAnnuntis; and
the Parents' Association.
