COMMENDING the Long Island Explorium Children's
Museum of Science & Engineering upon the occasion of
hosting its 3rd Annual Eastern Long Island Mini
Maker Faire on June 9, 2018
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that the quality
of life of the citizens of the State of New York is greatly enriched by
its exceptional cultural, educational and recreational institutions; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commend the Long Island Explorium Children's Museum of Science &
Engineering upon the occasion of hosting its 3rd Annual Eastern Long
Island Mini Maker Faire on Saturday, June 9, 2018, in Port Jefferson,
New York; and
WHEREAS, The Long Island Explorium Children's Museum of Science &
Engineering (formerly known as the Maritime Explorium) was launched in
2004 by a consortium of scientists, educators and entrepreneurial
residents seeking to provide a rich educational STEAM experience to the
Long Island and NY metro area community; in May of 2005, the Long Island
Explorium was designated as a not-for-profit organization and was
chartered with the New York State Department of Education; and
WHEREAS, The Long Island Explorium Children's Museum of Science &
Engineering is widely recognized as Long Island's Family Maker Space, a
place for families to play, create, build and grow together; and
WHEREAS, Today, the Long Island Explorium Children's Museum of
Science & Engineering continues to expand its programming to include
professional teacher development and training to meet the goals of the
Next Generation Science Standards in New York State; in addition, the
Long Island Explorium is a New York State certified provider of
Continuing Teacher and Leader Education (CTLE) credits; and
WHEREAS, The Explorium's Maker Faire is a gathering of fascinating,
curious people who enjoy learning and who love sharing what they can do;
from engineers to artists to scientists to crafters, Maker Faire is a
venue for these "makers" to show hobbies, experiments and projects; and
WHEREAS, The Maker Faire is part of the larger Maker Faire brand
associated with the Faires in New York City, The Bay Area, Berlin,
Barcelona and other Maker Faires throughout the world that celebrate
creativity and innovation in the areas of Science, Technology,
Engineering, Art and Math; and
WHEREAS, Last year, more than 100 Makers and 2000 participants of
all ages experienced innovative robots, kinetic and interactive art,
fire sculptures, explored the ocean through virtual reality and many
more cutting edge creative experiences through hands-on, minds-on
exhibits and performances at the Maritime Explorium and the neighboring
Village Center and Harborfront Park; and
WHEREAS, For the last 14 years, the Long Island Explorium Children's
Museum of Science & Engineering has strived to be a leader in STEAM
education, learning and innovation that will shape the intellect, social
values and principles of current and future generations; and
WHEREAS, The expert staff of the Long Island Explorium Children's
Museum of Science & Engineering, are and always have been characterized
by an impressive commitment, an unbridled enthusiasm, and an
uncompromising standard of excellence, and accordingly merit the
commendation of this Legislative Body; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Long Island Explorium Children's Museum of Science &
Engineering upon the occasion of hosting its 3rd Annual Eastern Long
Island Mini Maker Faire on June 9, 2018; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Long Island Explorium Children's Museum of Science &
Engineering.
