COMMEMORATING the 50th Anniversary of the Dix
Hills Jewish Center

WHEREAS, Religious institutions, and the many spiritual, social and
educational benefits they confer, play a vital role in the development
of the moral fabric of a responsible citizenry; and

WHEREAS, It is the tradition of New York State and our Nation to pay
tribute to those institutions and individuals who have contributed to
the ethical and spiritual values of their communities; and

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commemorate the
50th Anniversary of the Dix Hills Jewish Center; and

WHEREAS, The Dix Hills Jewish Center was founded in 1968, by a group
of committed families seeking a place for worship, education, community
and friendship; and

WHEREAS, Since its humble beginnings, the Dix Hill Jewish Center has
grown to serve a congregation of more than 700 families; and

WHEREAS, The Dix Hills Jewish Center is a participatory, egalitarian
and dynamic Conservative congregation predicated upon the three
traditional Hebrew terms for synagogue: Beit Tefillah, Beit Midrash and
Beit Knesset; and

WHEREAS, Beit Tefillah is Hebrew for a House of Prayer; the Dix
Hills Jewish Center provides a high quality and inspiring religious
atmosphere in which every member may participate in prayer and
meditation, promoting the celebration of sacred moments in the lives of
the congregants; and

WHEREAS, Beit Midrash is Hebrew for a House of Study; the Dix Hills
Jewish Center engages its entire community in the mitzvah of Torah
study; an array of creative and exciting educational programs are
provided to children and adults of all ages to foster lifelong learning;
and

WHEREAS, Beit Knesset is Hebrew for a House of Assembly; the Dix
Hills Jewish Center encourages participation by all members in a warm,
embracing and caring fashion; the center facilitates Jewish growth
through a myriad of cultural and social activities and provides an
environment which fosters the development of an extending caring
congregation; and

WHEREAS, The synagogue community is a beacon of Torah and
traditions, commitment to Israel, and dedication to the Jewish principle
of Tikkun Olam, healing the world, marking celebrations and loss with
love, support and a spirit of community; and

WHEREAS, Additionally, the Suffolk Jewish Center and the Commack
Jewish Center have merged with the Dix Hills Jewish Center, serving as
the only synagogue in Suffolk County with twice daily minyans; and


WHEREAS, Among the many programs available to congregants are an
outstanding Early Childhood Academy, Religious School, Bar and Bat
Mitzvah Education, Men's Club, Sisterhood, Social Action Committee,
Adult Learning programs, United Synagogue Youth Group programs, cultural
activities and many more; and

WHEREAS, Rabbi Howard R. Buechler has served as the synagogue's
spiritual leader for 26 years; he is joined by Cantor Steven Hevenstone
in providing a place of worship which is warm, inviting and is truly a
second home for the Jewish community of Dix Hills; and

WHEREAS, The Dix Hills Jewish Center stands on the threshold of
tomorrow, prepared to meet the challenges of the coming decades while
retaining that spiritual resolve which characterizes its past; and

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to take note of
enduring religious institutions and to bring such institutions to the
attention of the people of this Empire State; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Dix Hills Jewish Center; and be
it further

RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Rabbi Howard R. Buechler and Cantor Steven Hevenstone,
Dix Hills Jewish Center.
