COMMEMORATING the 200th Anniversary of the
Jefferson County Agricultural Society
WHEREAS, The State of New York takes great pride in the strength of
its communities and agricultural economy and recognizes the importance
of promoting locally grown and raised products, and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commemorate the
200th Anniversary of the Jefferson County Agricultural Society; and
WHEREAS, The establishment of the Jefferson County Agricultural
Society on October 25, 1817, was centered around the promotion of New
York values of community and entrepreneurism; and
WHEREAS, The fair that was organized by the Jefferson County
Agricultural Society, starting a year later in 1818, is now the longest
consecutively running county fair in the United States of America, a
testament to the ongoing success of the fair; and
WHEREAS, On June 8, 1853, the Legislature of the State of New York
enacted "An act to Facilitate the Forming of Agricultural and
Horticultural Societies", leading to the filing of other acts and
supplementary proceedings which incorporated the Jefferson County
Agricultural Society on December 8th, 1854; and
WHEREAS, The Jefferson County Fair has grown to encompass a wide
range of activities, from agricultural exhibits and shows to a
demolition derby, Fireman's parade, and a host of locally produced food
on display; and
WHEREAS, The Jefferson County Fair, to be held this year July 11th
through July 16th, continues to serve as an attraction bringing hundreds
of people each year to see what the county has to offer; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when
societies of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our
attention, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens
of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the Jefferson County Agricultural
Society; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of the Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Jefferson County Agricultural Society.
