MEMORIALIZING Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim
May 9, 2017, as Police Memorial Day in the State of
New York

WHEREAS, Police Memorial Day is a day of mourning for those police
officers who have given their lives in the line of duty; and

WHEREAS, This is a day to reflect upon the ultimate contributions
made each day by police officers who protect our society and well-being;
and

WHEREAS, In 2016, 40 police officers died in New York State; two of
those 40 were killed in the line of duty: Trooper Timothy P. Pratt, on
October 26th and Sergeant Paul J. Tuozzolo, NYPD, on November 4th; and
38 of those 40, who died from 2003 through 2016, were deemed to have
succumbed as a result of World Trade Center-related illnesses or
injuries; and

WHEREAS, In commemorating May 9, 2017, as Police Memorial Day in New
York State, this Legislative Body honors those officers who have given
their lives in the satisfaction of their duties and offers comfort to
the family members and fellow officers left behind, and recognizes the
loyal servitude by all police officers in New York State which permits
us to thrive in a safe, free and just society; and

WHEREAS, As an unending emblem of appreciation of the people of New
York State, in 1989, this Legislative Body sanctioned the creation of a
Police Memorial at the State Capital revering all police officers in New
York State who have sacrificed their lives in the line of duty; now,
therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
memorialize Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim May 9, 2017, as Police
Memorial Day in New York State, certain that such course of action
mirrors our collective dedication to maintain the fundamental nature of
freedom which is our American heritage; and be it further

RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to The Honorable Andrew M. Cuomo, Governor of the State of
New York; to appropriate officers and members of the police community;
and to the loving survivors of the brave officers who died in New York
State in 2016, and of those officers who have died in prior years.
